Game Categories Revised Is A Very Handy Nibble Of Homebrew

Game Categories Revised Aka Game Categories Plugin V4

Intergalactic backyard code cowboy Bubbletune has just released the fourth iteration of his definitive, home-cooked Game Categories plugin, and this time he’s titled it Game Categories Revised. In case you weren’t informed at the door, this is a plugin that enables you to organize your files and homebrew goodies in convenient sections accessible via XMB. The plugin got a complete make-over since its last release, and Bubbletune wrote this changelog to accompany the new release:

  • Removed vshmenu option, it was slightly buggy and I’ve now provided two alternatives.
  • Added Multi-MS mode, see section below for more information.
  • Added pre-game-menu mode, see section below for more information.
  • Reloading of the game modules will now be done via a patch as opposed to faking a memory stick ejection.
  • Added keycombo to switch between the two modes (L + R + Home).
  • Added configuration file to remember your latest category chosen and your current mode.
  • Did some bugfixing on the patches, should have solved removal bug, random corruption, and probably some other things.
  • (if you are still experiencing any problems with this, don’t hesitate to report them and I’ll see what I can do)

The plugin should work on PSPs that utilize 5.00 M33 or 5.02 GEN. The developer makes a critical point in saying that if you’re using GEN, you’ll have to make sure to disable the built-in Game Categories plugin. Do so by way of the Configuration option in the Recovery menu. Definitely peep the readme, which is included in the download package. That package, of course, is sitting right here, so gobble it up.

PSP homebrew - PSP Grader v008

Hats off to PSP developers Klutsch and RainMotorsports, whose collaborative efforts have produced a nifty piece of homebrew entitled PSP Grader 8. This is a Windows application that makes great advances in uniting PlayStation Portables with their destined homebrews.

PSP Grader v0008 enables users to create magic memsticks, inject IPLs, and download official eboots directly from the application. It also loads eboots that are tied up in ZIP files. Future support for RAR and 7z archive formats is expected in the next release. This software is compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Vista, and the mysterious Windows 7. Notice that it’s not necessary to install Microsoft’s .NET framework. Grab the PSP Grader v008 download package here and start reflecting on why you love the PSP underground so much.

The Labyrinth Is A Brand New Home Cooked Treat

PSP homebrew - The Labyrinth

While we were just standing around here and getting fat, seanpaul223 roasted up a gnarly new piece of code titled The Labyrinth. This is a little dungeon-crawling example coded in Lua which utilizes the RayCasting Engine to render a 3D environment. So far, your goal in this exciting game is to win the game by escaping from the game. So, you’ll have to run around until you win. Yep, it hearkens back to our first forays into running around deep inside awesome 3D dungeons, like those found in Moraff’s Blast and Wolfenstein. Here’s a few words from seanpaul223 himself:

“As a matter of fact,The main aim of this brew is to show The game engine. The game apperas to be tridimentional, but it doesn’t uses any 3D algorithm, just RayCasting. I’ve based this engine on Sean Connelly’s Codetank Source, and F. Permadi’s tutorial.”

seanpaul223 does indicate that the animation is pretty slow on the PSP, and, despite adjustments intended to crank up the speed, it’s still sluggish. Nevertheless, it’s a fine piece of art in the works. Let’s give this thing some time to really heat up. Shout out to seanpaul223 for his efforts in keeping all of us boggle-eyed homebrew freaks amused.

SXLibrary Is A Potentially Valuable Resource For Homebrewers

PSP homebrew - SXLibrary

For you folks in the scene that are handy with function calls, here’s an exciting tidbit to salivate over: The brave infrastructure gnome, Xart, has released a brand new library intended for use in developing applications and games for the PSP.

We don’t know much about this exciting little gem, but we do know that its eager to work with intraFont, the PSP font library developed by benHur. Xart mentioned that the GUI and and Transition functions are not ready yet, so they won’t be appearing in this version. You’ll just have to take a look at what code does exist and make some sense out of it for yourself. If you’re into tinkering, start throwing this thing back and forth a bit, and see what you come up with.

Pile ou Face v0.1 Just Barely Made It Onto Our Screens

Monday, January 26th, 2009

PSP homebrew - Pile ou Face v0.1

Team PCT is back with Pile ou Face v0.1, a silly little game for your PSP that’ll ensure that you don’t ever have a spare minute ever again. Team PCT are the same affable clowns who brought you GoodShell v3 just a few weeks back. So, if you’re in the mood for some nerdy jollies, grab this download right here and enjoy yourself all night long.

Pile ou Face v0.1 is a Heads or Tails game, and it’s coded fresh ‘n clean in Lua. The whole point of the game is to win the game. Mind-boggling. Fortunately, it also plays music, so you can hear your ogg, mp3, and aa3 files. A new version is cresting on the horizon, and it promises a brand new interfaces, some kind of fashionable “fun” mode, and a high-scores file. For now, this game serves just to remind you of how terrific it is to be part of the thriving PSP underground. Stay tuned for more love, later on.

Invader Zim Homebrew Game Is Set To Arrive With Its Pants Around Its Ankles

Monday, January 26th, 2009

PSP Homebrew - Invader Zim Homebrew Game

Here’s an awesome tidbit for you fans of the indefatigable Invader Zim: Bigbobrocks has coughed up the homebrew Invader Zim game from two years back, so all y’all can get some sleazy delight out of it. It was officially put to rest last year, but it’s back in all of its skeletal, reanimated glory. Thanks be to The Man Who Can for the power to resurrect.

Not all of the original files made it back from the dead, but the first level still exists as it was before. There’s also a beta of level two that you can screw around with. We’re hoping that the original dev team will rise up, have some pizza, cut off their two-year long beards, and get back into the groove of making this game as incredible as it should be.  We’re waiting for an official drop of the file, so stay plugged in. We’ll have it here as soon as it’s available.

BakonICE v1.91 Makes A Grand Entrance

Monday, January 26th, 2009

PSP Homebrew - BakonICE v1.91BakonICE, the homebrew morsel authored by NoEffex, is now here as BakonICE v1.91. This is a clutch cheat device optimized for use with SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Firestorm Bravo 2. New cheats have been added, and some pesky bugs have been disposed of. Here’s the current changelog:

  • Fixed bugs in the installer
  • Installer auto-checks firmware
  • Added a few new cheats, including infinite health, one shot kill, etc.
  • On the above note: It is effing pointless to play online anyway. Someone found a ban code via nitePR, and released it, now everyone can ban anyone. Don’t even complain.

A frustrated NoEffex also had this to say, with regard to some flak he’s been getting from the rabble-rabble underground:

…you guys(you know who you are) blew it. I’m tired of trying to make things better and get called out for it. Since you all think it’s so destructive, just wait until they get a hold of this one. Then you will realize you were VERY wrong.

Don’t piss off NoEffex. He’s been working hard so all of us can find some meaning in our sweaty, rotted-over existences. More news as it unravels.
