No Gravity: The Plague Of Mind Arrives On PSN

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Gravity landing: No Gravity: The Plague Of Mind arriving on PSN tomorrow

On Thursday, February 26th, No Gravity: The Plague Of Mind arrived on the PlayStation Network for fans to rock out to. Says Sebastien Rubens of Anozor, the brand new version that’s available on PSN is “an entirely rewritten and improved” version that’ll “meet higher standards.”

The original No Gravity, which was a rerelease of Space Girl, was a popular homebrew port that arrived for the Sony PSP on March 2, 2007. The PSN release seems to be the first mainstream homebrew that was picked up, redeveloped, and launched anew on the Network. That being said, will other homebrew ports follow suit? This is an exciting handshake between the homebrew underworld and the above-ground PlayStation Network.

The original game of Space Girl was released in 1998 and was subsequently ported to Linux, Mac OS X, Amiga OS, BeOS, and the PSP.

Rumor Has It That PSP 2 Will Not Include UMD Drive

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

According to Acclaim developer David Perry, the new PSP – the PlayStation Portable 2 – will not include a UMD disc drive.

In recent statements made by the developer, it’s unclear whether or not Perry is just reiterating rumors he heard himself, or if he’s commenting on genuine information that he received from the inside. Says David Perry on his Twitter and Facebook accounts, “I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they’ve removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I’m excited!”

In the case that the PSP 2 doesn’t utilize a UMD disc drive, then chances are the hardware will utilize PSN downloads and Memory Sticks to handle software. UMD backwards compatibility would still be an issue to be resolved, however.

Now, there’s been a ton of speculation, most of it completely unconfirmed, with regard to the forthcoming new PSP. The best we can probably do at this point is fall back and wait patiently for Sony to make an official announcement as to hardware features. Don’t get all crazy yet – everything’s speculative!

Report From Variety Shows PSN At One Fifth Of Revenue Of Xbox Live

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

PSN News

Those of us battling waves on the high seas of global network gaming behind the flag of the PlayStation Network might be disappointed to know that the PSN has reportedly generated profits of about $180 million so far for Sony, whereas Xbox Live has earned Microsoft at least $1 billion since its launch.

PlayStation Network, or PSN, includes both PS3 and PSP users and has generated approximately 20% of the revenue of Xbox Live, though its been active for approximately 40% of Xbox Live’s current lifespan. However, PSN registration is totally free, whereas Xbox Live costs $50 per year for a premium Gold subscription, adding significantly to its total revenue stream.

The revenue report, however, does not speak to the total number of registrations per network; Sony currently holds the most registered network users – about 3 million more, according to a report Wednesday.
