PSP Replay Routine Comes To Popular Softsynth Tracker Protrekkr

Protrekkr with PSP replay routine

The battle-tested underworld programmer, hitchhiker, has released a PSP replay routine for use with his formidable softsynth tracker program. Hitchhiker warns that the program is intended for use on much more powerful machines than the PSP, so the release is experimental at best. That said, the program should yield some positive results, perhaps even going so far as to create a pretty useable music programming environment.

Hitchhiker informs us that users of the PSP replay routine should drop down the DSP effects and channels polyphony a bit, and adds that  “especially the flanger fx is a really heavy toll because the media engine doesn’t have any integrated hardware sin/cos or pow instructions.”

The PSP replay routine utilizes the 2nd processor in the machine in order to keep the drain on the main CPU minimal. Here’s a few more points from the developer:

  • Samples depacking with the PSP codecs isn’t implemented yet (so samples packing should be set to “none” in that case)
  • The tracker itself is open source and available on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X
  • Tere is a quick little test using one of the 303 unit (tested on 1.5 and 3.40oe, older consoles)
