Price Cut Announcement For PS3 Expected This Week

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

PS3 Price Cut Coming Very Soon

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey writes that “recent channel checks indicate increased speculation for a PS3 price cut announcement from Sony in the next couple of days.”

Sony is scheduled to meet with retailers this week at the annual Destination PlayStation conference. Says Mike Hickey, “We think the company needs to reduce the current price by $100 to effectively restart unit velocity at retail.”

He continues further:

“We are also hearing continued speculation that Sony is working on a non-Blu-ray PS3 console, which could enable them to make the aforementioned hardware price reduction. We believe the market is expecting a PS3 price cut in April or by June (E3) at the latest, so a near term aggressive pricing decision by Sony could provide a positive catalyst for video game related stocks including GameStop, Activision and Take-Two Interactive. If Sony does not cut the price of their console, we expect the continuation of languishing PS3 hardware sales and the potential for publishers to accelerate their reallocation of resources away from the PS3 console.”

Certainly a price cut would be necessary to ensure that the PlayStation stays as competitive or more competitive than its core rivals, the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360. Sony has already secured its grip on the high-definition market by thrusting its Blu-Ray format to the fore, and it already makes use of the extra space available on the Blu-format disc – a significant technology advantage over its competitors.

Sony Declares Awesome Year Ahead For PlayStation

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

PSP Growth Expected

Sony spoke dramatically and forcefully at the annual Destination PlayStation event of “another record year of growth and momentum” for the PlayStation Portable and the PS3. Says the CEO and President of Sony Computer Entertainment, Jack Tretton,

“With a year of record sales ushering us into the new year, we continue to raise the bar on providing consumers the deepest and broadest entertainment content for every member of the family to enjoy. With new content being added every day to the PlayStation Network combined with an unmatched line up of exclusive titles on PSP, and the roll out of truly groundbreaking games such as Killzone 2 for PS3, we remain confident in our approach and strategy for another record year of growth and momentum.”

This declaration comes on the heels of the announcement of two new PSP entertainment packs, including the lilac PSP. Things are certainly looking on the up-and-up for Sony, as they stood behind previews of a formidable showcase of forthcoming PS3 titles. Games such as Killzone 2, inFamous, MAG, UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves, God Of War III, and MLB ’09: The Show are set to drive sales through the roof this fiscal year. We’ll keep on rooting that Sony gets to the top.

Lilac PSP On The Way With Hannah Montana Entertainment Pack

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Sony announces Lilac PSP, Hannah Montana and Assassin's Creed entertainment packs

Sony just had another brilliant idea: A Hannah Montana version of the PSP is set to drop on our heads as part of a $199 awesome marketing package geared toward that particularly screaming and energetic demographic of almost-teenage girls. The PSP Lilac will come with Miley Cyrus’s Hannah Montana PSP game, a UMD with some Hannah Montana episodes, a 2 gigabyte memstick, and even some gnarly stickers.

For a different slice of the demographic pie, Sony also announced plans to release an Assassin’s Creed Entertainment Pack. More details on that particular drop are to arrive a little later this year, according to Sony. As for now, we’ll just have to be satisfied with knowing that our next PSP is going to be purple and will be blasting awesome girl-righteous pop songs.

PSP Tool 0.9 Arrives On Your Screen

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

PSP Tool 0.9

The ubiquitous, multipurpose homebrew application, PSP Tool, has just arrived in its newest form from mastermind homebrew developer Raing3. The PSP Tool v0.9 is likely to be the final version of the popular program, which performs various general management functions for the PSP. Here’s the rundown of its functionalities:

  • Backup and Restore the IdStorage of the PSP
  • Check the IPL injected on the Memory Stick or a file located on the Memory Stick
  • Check, Backup, Restore and change the battery EEPROM
  • Connect various devices through a USB cable
  • Create a checksum of the IPL injected on the Memory Stick or an IPL located on the Memory Stick
  • Create a variety of different Magic Memory Sticks
  • Erase the entire IPL space of the Memory Stick
  • Extract the IPL injected on the Memory Stick to a file
  • Format the Memory Stick
  • Inject a variety of included IPLs or an IPL from a file to the Memory Stick

And here’s the official changelog for version 0.9:

  • Added: Support for 2.71 SE and 1.50 running under Time Machine and check to disable running on 3.71.
  • Fixed: RSOD when choosing ‘Test M33’ feature on a DC7 MMS created with this application (only occured on Fat).
  • Fixed: Issue using SQUARE as part of the boot key when creating a Magic Memory Stick.
  • Fixed: Issue which could arise when creating more than one Magic Memory Stick in a single session.
  • Other: Other Memory Sticks can now be formatted by first clicking on the format item in the menu and before answering yes to the questions insert the second Memory Stick.
  • Other: To reduce the risk of a BSOD when installing or running a firmware from a Magic Memory Stick the registry of a 1.50 system is now copied instead of the registry of the current system (to use the current systems registry files hold the L trigger while the Magic Memory Stick is being created.)
  • Other: Implemented a check for modules which are known to cause issues with PSP Tool. If any of these modules are found a message is first shown with the modules which need to be disabled and then the PSP performs a reboot. To disable this check hold the R trigger while loading the game.
  • Updated: Now uses VLF library 1.0 by moonlight.
  • Updated: Updated the information shown in the System Information panels.

The developer says he’ll release another version if support for the firmware v3.71 becomes an issue, or if a new version of DC is released. For now, grab the download package here and get started doing useful stuff on your PlayStation Portable.

PopBlocks v1.0.0 Pops Up In The Shop

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

PopBlocks v1.0.0: PSP port of Pushori

The backyard brewer Gefa has released a game called PopBlocks, which is a port of the popular Flash-based game, Pushori. PopBlocks v1.0.0 is a matching game that’s easy to learn and extremely difficult to master. Essentially, you push blocks from the left or from the right on a three-by-three grid. Your goal is to match up two like-patterned blocks in the vertical columns. You’ll see how it works just as soon as you turn it on. Check out the readme that’s packed in with the game file. Also, we’ve got this little quote from Gefa himself, badly mangled by the machine translator, but charming in its own right:

“Hi. We have issued ad PopBlocks, a puzzle game clone of the flash game pushori (eh is between today and yesterday c’avevo not own anything to do but the school again tomorrow …)

I am not explain how it works in this regard I refer you to read the file HowToPlay.pdf in this package.”

Enjoy!

Protrekkr v1.93 Expands PSP Replay Routine Feature

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

PSP homebrew - Protrekkr with PSP replay routine v1.93

Fans of the tracker program Protrekkr will be astounded to know that a new update is already here, and it further expands the application’s PSP replay routine feature. Protekkr v1.93, developed by the mad beat scientist hitchhikr, is a PC-based software sequencer that has replay compatibility with the PSP. Here’s what’s new in version 1.93:

  • Resampler improved, should produce much less aliasing.
  • Fixed a small issue involving the cache memory in the PSP replay.
  • Added an option to show or hide the bottom panel in order to display more patterns rows (Shortcut: LSHIFT+ESCAPE to toggle the view)
  • Left shift wasn’t active while editing data columns of patterns to enter digits.
  • Added global lists for instruments and synths, that should improve the ergonomy a bit.
  • Samples weren’t re-initiliazed correctly after a “New Module” command was issued.
  • Fixed a bug in the 2nd oscillator of the synth core when using custom waveforms.
  • Fixed the rand commands in the synth tab.
  • Midi controller modification command (0×90) wasn’t accessible anymore in panning row, fixed.
  • Fixed an issue that could occur with rand() function under linux.
  • Introduced zoomed tracks; Each track can be zoomed independantly and will be displayed with a bigger font.
  • Track volume wasn’t correctly re-initialized when only instrument column was filled without any note.
  • Midi notes off command was broken.
  • Effect 0xAxx (Set Random Cutoff) slightly modified, the xx value is now the amplitude of the calculated random value from 0 to 0xff.
  • Implemented midi in/out for Linux and Mac OS X.
  • Fixed a bug in the recording mode.
  • Recording now starts at the current pattern line instead of restarting from it’s beginning.
  • An extra note was pasted after names input when editing mode was turned on.

Good stuff. Thanks to Protekkr for all his hard work and for proving that the PSP can be useful indeed in a studio environment.

Family Guy Theme Just Came Stumbling In

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Family Guy Theme

Finally! We’ve got a Family Guy theme for our PSP. It should all be here, folks, the whole gang. You know Family Guy, right? That little animated series whipped up by Seth MacFarlane, right? Only the funniest show ever made on the entire planet hands down period game over, right? Right.

Anyway, Family Guy revolves around a crazy family in the town of Quahog, Rhode Island. It stars Peter, the fat, dumb guy; his wife, Lois (she’s beautiful); their son, the overweight, naive Chris; their daughter, the beloved and much-ridiculed Megan; Stewie, the infant who speaks with an upper-class British accent and is a maniac; and the dog, Brian, who is truly a chill dude. With a drinking problem.

Grab the theme here. It’s easy. Here’s what you do to get on your PSP:

  • Place theme.p3t file in X:/PSP/THEME/ folder and select theme from XMB->Settings->Themes
  • X is your psp USB or PSP media card
  • Or Download Only theme file directly from your PSP internet browser.

Enjoy!

Official PSP Firmware v5.05 Released

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

New PSP firmware released [v5.05]

For those of you keeping it mainstream, above-ground, and for real, here’s what’s up: Sony just released an update to the official PSP firmware, so now the count’s at v5.05. Chances are, though, you won’t run into it at all, because the update is exclusively contained on the UMD of the Japanese game Idolmaster SP.

It’s not the first time that Sony has done something like this; for instance, v3.96 was packaged with Hot Shots Golf 2, right on the UMD.

We’re not even really sure what’s different in this update – it’s likely just a minor fix that addresses compatibility issues with the Idolmaster game itself. But, if you’re keeping count, that’s where we’re at: v5.05. No word on when the next “major” bump-up is set to drop, but we’ll keep you posted.
