Disco PSP v0.1 Is A Bizarre Non-Game

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

It’s finally here, folks: Disco PSP v0.1 just came crashing down to Earth, courtesy of the mad homebrew scientist, jade2293. So what is it, exactly? Well, we’re not sure. It appears to be a program that shows you spinning disco balls while it plays music from that unforgettable era. Let’s get into a little about what disco was all about:

First of all, disco is a genre of dance music. It has its origins in the United States as far back as the late 60s, but primarily disco came into life in the early 70s. Its musical influences are directly from funk and soul, but there’s clearly a distinct disco sound – it’s the four-on-the-floor beat, the open hi-hat on the off-beat, and the steady, octave-jumping bassline. Well, disco spawned a cultural phenomenon that leaked into media, movies, dress, language – all the good parts of culture. The music kind of sucks, though. That’s the honest truth. But, it did directly segue into house music, which, with techno, opened up the beautiful, vast genre of electronica. You’ll hear disco themes today in house and trance, primarily.

Anyway, back to Disco PSP v0.1. It is exactly what it is. Load it up and get started right now.

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

PSP Homebrew - PSPiton v0.3

The acclaimed homebrewer eloivanelst has released PSPiton v0.3, much to the joy of his anxiously awaiting fans. PSPiton is a simple application that’ll assist in downgrading or upgrading a PSP to the firmware of a user’s choice. It also includes a bunch of other information relevant to the homebrew underworld. Eloivanelst tells us that he completely remade the application, managing to bring its file size down from 24 MB to less than 1 MB – a considerable shift. Check out the official changelog:

  • Re-made the app (not really a changelog, lol)
  • Updated the applications (Now still includes 4 apps, but there will be loads more in furture! (PSPFiler, Ultimate PSPTube, CWCheat, Adhoc File Transfer))
  • New, simple look (which made the file size alot smaller)
  • Improved information
  • Bug fix, which caused an error if you hitted one of the numpad keys

The developer also leaves us with a list of his plans for the next version of PSPiton:

  • More apps, of course
  • Improved info
  • Something extra’s??
  • The up- and downgraders files + info
  • Translations??
  • And maybe some bugs fixed…

Get the download package here to give it a spin. Thanks to Eloivanelst for all of his hard work.

Zuma Arrives On PSN For PS3

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Those of you lucky enough to own a PS3 along with your PSP will be pleased to know that the popular PopCap puzzle game, Zuma, is set to arrive on the PSN today. The annoying little time stealer seems to be coming in with a facelift that’s intended to take advantage of the PS3’s hardware, including its Dolby 5.1 surround sound. It’ll also have PSP remote play, so you’ll be able to get your small screen in on the action, too.

In the game of Zuma, you’ve got to eliminate all of the balls that are rolling around the screen before they reach a yellow skull. You have to shoot new balls at the ever-encroaching chain of balls in order to blast them away three at a time. You can also trigger chain reactions, resulting in lots of balls getting all balled out. The game’s got a ton of balls, folks.

We’re excited to see what the new PSN version is going to look like. Likely it’ll be similar to the game as we know it, but a little glossier on the outside.

PSP Homebrew - Play Everywhere v1

Barreling down the French homebrew circuit this morning is a brand-new application, and it’s calling itself Play Everywhere. Developed in LUA by the French (or possibly Italian) development team, GeekInside, Play Everywhere v1 sports five little widget-like programs and has a few utility functions to round it off. The developers promise much more to come as the code evolves. For now, here’s the development log:

  • Five-games: Pong, Piano, Superman, Paint, Love
  • possible to explore the contents of the memory stick
  • possible to make the dump dell’UMD
  • can refer to the information system

Looks like a hearty, healthy new program, ready to grow up into something great!

Don’t Gag: The Jonas Brothers Theme Is Now Here

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The Jonas Brothers Theme

That’s right, folks: An unofficial Jonas Brothers theme for your PlayStation Portable has just arrived, so you’ll be able to stuff those three pop-star brothers right onto your handheld – now they’ll live on in eternity!

The pop group consists of Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas, and Nick Jonas, three musical brothers from New Jersey. They kicked off their career on the Disney Channel, and have put out three albums since 2006. All three are wholesome citizens in their off-stage life, donating 10% of their earnings to the charity they founded, Change For The Children Foundation. They also (reportedly) abstain from all drugs and alcohol. Youth all over the world are in love with the trio, and they themselves have lots of high-profile fans, including the first daughters, Sasha and Malia Obama.

Okay, that’s that. Let’s move on to the installation instructions:

  • Place theme.p3t file in X:/PSP/THEME/ folder and select theme from XMB->Settings->Themes
  • X is your psp USB or PSP media card
  • Or Download Only theme file directly from your PSP internet browser.

There it is, folks! Enjoy!

Dynasty Warriors: Strike Force Demo Is Now Available

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Exclusively for Japanese PlayStation Network account holders, the demo for Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce is now available, just released from its developer, Koei (its Japanese title is Shin Sangoku Musou: Multi Raid).

Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce is based on Dynasty Warriors 6 and is slated for release in the US and Europe this Spring. It’ll boast gameplay similar to Dynasty Warriors 6 for the PlayStation 3, with a few character changes; specifically, Huang Zhong and Xiahou now wield bows instead of scimitars. All the characters from the popular Dynasty Warriors series are slated to appear – and they’ll have a new flying power-up, too.

Online play for Strikeforce has not yet been confirmed, but the game will definitely support an ad-hoc multiplayer set-up.

The Game Of Life RC2 Is Fresh From The Laboratory

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The Game Of Life RC2: new themes, new patterns, better navigation

A brand new version of The Game Of Life has just been released by its developer, the formidable maxthebest. The Game of Life, or simply, Life, is an original zero-player game developed in 1970 by the British mathematician John Horton Conway. Its primary purpose was to emulate the action of cells in a general, mathematical context. Players determine the initial state of the system, press the “go” button, and watch it evolve. Here’s the rule set from the original game:

  1. Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbours dies (mimicking underpopulation).
  2. Any live cell with more than three live neighbours dies (mimicking overcrowding).
  3. Any live cell with two or three live neighbours lives, unchanged, to the next generation.
  4. Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbours becomes a live cell.

The Game Of Life PSP homebrew looks like a terrific clone of this oft-duplicated quasi-game. Here’s the changelog for The Game Of Life RC2:

  • Added a couple of themes: by pressing Triangle, you can switch from one theme to the other. There are 3 themes for the moment, you can change them by editging the images in the game directory (each cell is 8*8).
  • Added 4 brand new patterns: “The Queen Bee Shuttle”, “The Pentadecathlon”, “The Pulsar”, and the “Diehard”, which is special because it entirely?ies after exactly 130 generations (you can check the generations by pressing L).
  • When you press select, the menu pops up, and you can release the select button, which you couldn’t before. It might help you navigate through the menu. To make the menu disapear, just press Circle or select an option.

Props to maxthebest for this great piece of homebrew.

IvEr PSP v1.00 Is An iPhone-Inspired Interface

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

PSP Homebrew IvEr PSP v1.00

A freshman homebrewer known as cobra77380 has released his first application to the scene, titled IvEr – PSP v1.00. The developer utilizes some of the icons found on the iPhone to jazz up your small screen. Here’s the icon list for the first release:

  • SystemPaint (thank you to bomb-h)
  • Calculator
  • Clock
  • Credits
  • Youtube
  • Maps
  • MSN (ebbudy)
  • E-mail
  • Safari

Here’s the control list:

  • Round: accept an application into
  • Square: Leaving an application
  • For the ipod, square allows to leave the ipod but the song is still playing, so you can do something else, and start and stop the music back to the menu.

Now, cobra77380 warns us of a few bugs crawling around this first release:

  • Finder (it is not the final do not be surprised if it is zero)
  • Lua editor (does not work but I solve the problem)
  • Ipod (it works but when you leave a song to start another ca bug, because of the ram, I metterais codes to download the images, it should work).

Hopefully the developer will clear those up for the next release. Cobra77380 also plans to implement some games, a notes feature, and some new settings for the next release. Props to the developer for his hard work, and we welcome him to the cyberpunk underworld of the PSP homebrew scene.

PSP homebrew - PSPBTCNF tool v2, now with Slim support

We just received v2 of the popular homebrew editor, PSPBTCNF Tool, and now its developer has re-released PSPBTCNF Tool v2 with support for the PSP Slim. Manatails007 brewed up the application to allow users to extract, edit, build and flash the pspbtjnf.bin, pspbtknf.bin and pspbtlnf.bin files. This allows users to load plugins directly from flash0. Here’s a review of the controls and functionality:

  • Press X to extract BIN files to ms.
  1. it will be saved as text format. now you can edit it with your text editor
  2. text files will be created at root directory of your memory stick
  • Press TRIANGLE to build BIN files
  1. convert your modified text files to BIN format
  • Press SQUARE to flash BIN files
  1. it flashes your new edited BIN files to flash0

Now, just as before, you’ll have to take care to build the BIN files prior to flashing them, or you’ll brick your PSP. Then, you’ll have to go back to shooting marbles, twiddling an Etch-A-Sketch, repairing your battery-powered propeller beanie, and doing whatever else it was that we did before we had our PlayStation Portables.
