In case you’re just tuning in, Persona is a PSP port of the acclaimed PlayStation title from developer Atlus. Lots of new stuff will be included in the remake, which is much more than a basic port of the original game. Persona for PSP is slated to arrive on shelves in Japan on April 29th.

The character trailers are exclusively in Japanese, but hardcore fans will appreciate the glimpses, even if they’re up against a language barrier. New Trailer For The Dragonball: Evolution Game Arrives

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Namco Bandai Games and 20th Century Fox announced back on January 19th that a Dragonball: Evolution game would be released for the PSP to coincide with the movie’s release. The movie’s been shooting since the end of 2007 and stars some familiar faces as the series’ powerful heroes and villains. The tie-in game will include a story mode, which takes players through the events of the movie, as well as a mission mode and a nifty online battle mode.

The Dragonball: Evolution game trailer is the official teaser for the PSP release, complete with a booming narrator and mixed movie and game character sequences. Watch it right here if you’ve got a spare minute and a half, and especially if you’re pumped up for what could be a pretty exciting addition to the Dragonball legacy.

Metreon PlayStation Store in San Francisco To Close Its Doors

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Sony has left the building: Metreon PlayStation Store closing this Summer

Sad news for PlayStation lovers in San Francisco: The PlayStation store in the Metreon will be closing up shop this summer. The store first opened in 1999 and was the epicenter of PlayStation launches on the west coast. Other Sony Style stores certainly will remain open across the country, but none are so central to the PlayStation brand. Here’s what Sony’s got to say about this tragic development:

“Our lease with the Metreon for the PlayStation Store will expire this summer and we have chosen not to renew it. While we are always looking at new avenues for additional retail exposure and space, we felt it best not to continue with a dedicated PlayStation Store at the Metreon at this time.”

Sigh.

Anyway, the Metreon reports that the store’s lease actually is up on March 31st, so the clock’s ticking now.

JPCSP rev. 920 Arrives To The Adulation Of Emulation Fans

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

JPCSP rev 920 PSP emulator

JPCSP, the homebrewed PSP emulator for Windows that’s coded in Java, has just arrived from the JPCSP Team, which includes the dedicated brewer, Shadow. JPCSP rev. 920 offers up just one item in its changelog, but its release should reassure emulation fans that the popular PSP emulator is continuing to evolve. Here’s the quickie changelog:

  • Fixed video command TMATRIX

Of other note is another of Shadow’s projects, announced at the beginning of the month, which seeks to port JPCSP over to C++. Utilizing C++ as the coding backbone will likely produce a faster emulator overall. We’ll keep an eye on that project as it emerges. Thanks again to Shadow and his team for this clutch Windows application.

Merc Roid v0.25 Alpha Could Turn Into A Top-Notch Barrel Of Brew

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Merc Roid v.0.25 (Alpha): 3D Metroid clone

The clearly talented homebrew developer, lokiare1, has just released Merc Roid v0.25, a home-cooked game in its alpha stages that resembles 3D Metroid. This is the kind of high-potential, real-deal stuff that we love to see roll out of developer’s brains and onto the small screen. Check out what lokiare1 has to say about the current release:

“I’ve created a few new levels. I’ve added lava (damage, visual, and liquidyness). You can now pick up any upgrades that I put in a level. You can travel from one level to another (I don’t have a loading screen yet, but it is relatively quick to load each level).

I’ve added a few sound effects, but they are slow to load, and I’ve had some crash problems with them. I haven’t changed the screenshots yet, but I will later.

In 0.25 I’ve added the door shield that can require any attack type to open. I’ve implemented the missile pickup (you start with 10 I think each tank adds 5 more.) I’ve created the first boss, but he is not playable until the next update.”

Here’s the game’s control list:

  • L-Button – Jump (later I will have a system where you jump higher/further based on how much you do it).
  • R-Button – Shoot, hold for charge beam (shoots missiles when in missile mode, appears to charge but has no effect on the fire-power when in missile mode)
  • *Analog-Nub – Aims the gun (moves the camera)
  • Triangle – Moves forward (move speed will vary based on how much you move)
  • Square – Strafe left.
  • Circle – Strafe right.
  • Cross – Move Backward.
  • Select – Switch between missiles and beam mode

lokiare1 also weighs in with his itemized list of inclusions for future releases:

  • Create a story-line.
  • Create a menu screen.
  • Add a save feature.
  • Add doors that only open based on the attack that is used against them.
  • Add more monsters.
  • Add a few boss monsters.
  • Add zones that have different affects (water slows jump, move, and gravity speed, etc. etc…

Pick up the game right here to give it a try. As always, we’ll keep an ear to the ground for updates to Merc Roid as they drop.

Drunken Tale Is Newest 2D Homebrew Romp

Drunken Tale v1

Popping up fresh in the gaming garden today is a great piece of homebrew from developer eskema; it’s titled Drunken Tale. In this nifty, 2D sprite-and-tile based puzzle game, players take control of a little dude who’s really got a hankering for a drink. Players have to guide the alcoholic protagonist to the bar. Couldn’t be more fun, folks. Here’s what eskema has to say about his release:

  • “Well well its me again, ill bring u guys a new puzzle game, or maybe it is. You are a drunk guy who needs to go to the bar, so you “only” need to reach the bar (sounds simple huh?).
  • There are money in various colors and trashcans, so the green with green, blue with blue, etc, etc, each item unlock your way through the level.
  • You can carry only ONE item of each, if you try to get more than one, they be discarted. If you stuck in any level you can restart it with TRIANGLE, select brings back to menu screen, and start select any menu option.
  • The game has only 5 levels, so if anyone want to contribute and make more levels i will be proud and include in final release. Contact me and i show you how the map’s editor work.”

So, top off your pint of icy-cold Guinness (or, for you under-agers out there, your glass of icy-cold RC Cola) and grab the download package here to give Drunken Tale a spin.

PSP Replay Routine Comes To Popular Softsynth Tracker Protrekkr

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Protrekkr with PSP replay routine

The battle-tested underworld programmer, hitchhiker, has released a PSP replay routine for use with his formidable softsynth tracker program. Hitchhiker warns that the program is intended for use on much more powerful machines than the PSP, so the release is experimental at best. That said, the program should yield some positive results, perhaps even going so far as to create a pretty useable music programming environment.

Hitchhiker informs us that users of the PSP replay routine should drop down the DSP effects and channels polyphony a bit, and adds that  “especially the flanger fx is a really heavy toll because the media engine doesn’t have any integrated hardware sin/cos or pow instructions.”

The PSP replay routine utilizes the 2nd processor in the machine in order to keep the drain on the main CPU minimal. Here’s a few more points from the developer:

  • Samples depacking with the PSP codecs isn’t implemented yet (so samples packing should be set to “none” in that case)
  • The tracker itself is open source and available on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X
  • Tere is a quick little test using one of the 303 unit (tested on 1.5 and 3.40oe, older consoles)

You can check out Protrekkr with the PSP replay routine right here, as well as the aforementioned test program.

PSPBTCNF Tool Arrives To Assist Plugin Users

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

PSP homebrew - PSPBTCNF Tool

Brewing wizard manatails007 has just made public his PSPBTCNF editor, which he names PSPBTCNF Tool. This helpful little application allows users to manage the pspbtjnf.bin, pspbtknf.bin and pspbtlnf.bin files on your PSP, offering functions for extracting, editing, building and flashing the files. Ultimately, the program allows you to load plguins directly from flash0. Check out the simple instruction set from the developer:

  • Press X to extract BIN files to ms.
  1. it will be saved as text format. now you can edit it with your text editor
  2. text files will be created at root directory of your memory stick
  • Press TRIANGLE to build BIN files
  1. convert your modified text files to BIN format
  • Press SQUARE to flash BIN files
  1. it flashes your new edited BIN files to flash0.

Unfortunately, the current version of PSPBTCNF Tool does not support the PSP Slim. Also, you’ll have to build .bin files prior to flashing them, or you’ll brick your beloved PSP. Much love to manatails007 for his work on the program, which should prove to be a very useful application as it evolves.
