New VolDown Plugin Might Save Your Butt

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

VolDown Plugin

Coming in fresh from the homebrew code technician, jojojoris, is an interesting little utility that’ll ensure that you can kill the volume on your PSP in a pinch if you’ve forgotten to turn the sound down and you unwittingly turn the PSP back on at an inappropriate time. The developer puts it anecdotally as below – see if you can relate:

“Imagine: You are bored in boring math class. Your teacher is boring and the whole school is boring. You want to play a game on your psp. So you turn on your psp and then it happened. Last time you play on your psp you forget to turn the sound off. You hear the StartUp sound of your psp. The teacher heared it also and you have to gave your psp to the teacher.”

Sounds pretty useful to us. Here’s a quick description from the developer, as well as some installation instructions:

“It’s a small plugin which turns the vollume down to ZERO. After it had done it it unloads itselfe so is doesn’t use any memory after it had one its task.”

INSTALLATION:

——————

Code:

Step 1

  • Copy “VolDown.prx” to ms0:\seplugins\

Step 2

  • Add the following line to ms0:\seplugins\vsh.txt:
  • + ms0:\seplugins\VolDown.prx
  • + (you don’t have to add this line to game.txt)

Step 3

  • Turn off your PSP.

Step 4

  • Hold R while you turn your psp on again.

Step 5

  • In recovery go to plugins and enable VolDown.prx

Step 6

  • Close recovery.

Step 7

  • In XMB turn the volume to maximum.

Step 8

  • RestartYour PSP.

Step 9

  • Confirm that it works.

Step 10

  • Jump 3 times in the air and post a comment where you say that this has saved your life.

Thanks a lot to jojojoris for this little volume tool. We’re sure that it’ll come in handy for a number of grateful gamers.

Woman Charged With Hurling PlayStation 3

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Carlisle woman charged with throwing game console out window

In a bizarre piece of off-beat news, a woman in Carlisle, PA, appears to face multiple charges after angrily throwing a PlayStation 3 out of a third story window.

Shabre L. Cumberbatch, age 18, of the first block of West North Street, Carlisle, was charged with propulsion of missiles, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief for the incident. Police allege that around 9:52 a.m. on Sunday, the PlayStation came flying out of a third-story window and hit a car that was driving on West North Street. Cumberbatch also damaged a $50 set of blinds during the process of hurling the PS3. As she left the scene, she became loud and disruptive, adding insult to injury.

First of all, “propulsion of missiles?” We’re not talking about a rocket-propelled grenade here, folks. This may be the first time in history that a PlayStation 3 is considered a missile.

Second of all, our hearts go out to the poor PS3, whose life was senseless jeopardized in this terrible and violent episode. We pray for its speedy recover.

In all seriousness, though, hurling stuff out of windows is a dangerous thing to do and can easily injure innocent bystanders. So, the next time you’re furious with your PSP or any of your console systems, remember: Say no to video game hurling.

Netfront Internet Browser Beta Accelerates Your Browsing

Monday, March 30th, 2009

PSP homebrew: Netfront Internet Browser (beta)

Coming out of the brewer’s cauldron steaming hot is a new application, currently still in beta, that allows users of the PSP browser to overcome memory limitations and experience a much smoother Internet. The formidable programming group, Team P86, offers up Netfront Internet Browser Beta. The spokesman for the project, the astute application athlete, Ardatan, offers up a few notes on the new project:

  • You know, Sony limits our memory in Internet Browser. So we cannot play big flash games and open big web sites.
  • This mod removes this limitation. And you can use all of the memory that your PSP has.
  • If your PSP is Fat, the HighMemMod uses all of 32 MB RAM.
  • If your PSP is Slim, the HighMemMod uses all of 64 MB RAM!!!

As mentioned, Netfront Internet Browser is still in beta, so you can expect to run into a few hitches as Team P86 irons them out and adds more functionalities. We suggest that you grab the download package here and become an early adopter, so that you can offer up any advice to the programmers that you can. Thanks to Team P86 for what appears to be a terrific browser plug-in and a great piece of homebrew.

New World Of Warcraft Theme Arrives For Your PSP

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

World Of Warcraft Theme

Fresh off the theme creators’ pipeline is a new World Of Warcraft theme for fans of the massively multiplayer online game. Chances are you or someone close to you is already infected by this sinister, fast-moving viral virtual life, which has spread itself across the global in epic pandemic proportions since its inception in 2004.

World Of Warcraft, or WoW has about 11.5 million monthly subscribers, making it the world’s largest MMORPG in terms of subscription. It also holds the Guinness World Record for most popular MMORPG in the world. Several expansions have augmented the game since the official first release of WoW on November 23, 2004.

World Of Warcraft is a product of Blizzard Entertainment and is set in the Warcraft universe, which was first introduced in Blizzard’s Warcraft: Orcs & Humans way back in 1994. Warcraft saw a sequel, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness in December 1995. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos arrived in 2002, followed by an expansion called Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne in 2003. World Of Warcraft arrived ten years after the release of the first Warcraft game and ignited a gaming phenomenon the scope of which had never been witnessed on the planet.

In case you’re new to themes, here’s a quick rundown on how to install:

  • Place theme.p3t file in X:/PSP/THEME/ folder and select theme from XMB->Settings->Themes
  • X is your psp USB or PSP media card
  • Or Download Only theme file directly from your PSP internet browser.

Hardware Sales Figures In Japan Show The PSP On The Rise

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

PSP Sales Up

New console sales numbers from Japan have arrived from Media Create, demonstrating an upward trend for the PSP. The DSi, unsurprisingly, is holding a solid first, while the PSP climbs into the second spot by a significant margin. PS3 figures have dropped about 3,000 since the last poll, but still the system still holds strongly over the Wii. Xbox 360 is way down there around the PlayStation 2. Here’s the official list:

  1. Nintendo DSi: 71,233
  2. Playstation Portable: 65,765
  3. Playstation 3: 25,435
  4. Nintendo Wii: 18,095
  5. Nintendo DS Lite: 8,948
  6. Xbox 360: 5,441
  7. Playstation 2: 5,067

We’re anxious to see the next round of numbers, hoping to see a consistent upward trend in sales of the PSP. Hopefully Japan’s sales indicate consumer faith in the forthcoming “era of the PSP” as strong marketing from Sony and its development partners ensure an increasing awareness in the power and future of the PlayStation Portable.

Etch-A-Sketch Portable v0.1 Makes A Dashing Debut

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Etch-A-Sketch Portable v0.1

Up fresh in its nascent stages is an interesting little drawing utility that looks good enough to waste at least a few minutes on. The cheerful underworld coder,  ZeroXorXdieXskater is back with Etch-A-Sketch Portable v0.1. Here’s a little statement from the developer, as well as a few tips on the controls:

“Etch A Sketch Portable is just what the title implies.

Not only do you have the ability to make cool retro drawings

you can change the color of your Etch A Sketch as well.

I whipped this up in an afternoon so the graphics are not

too good. I may update them.”

–//What are the controls?\\–

  • Use the D-Pad or analog stick to control the cursor, as you move you draw.
  • Press start to change the color of your Etch A Sketch
  • Press music note to take a screenshot
  • Press Select to reset your Etch A Sketch

Just in case y’all forgot, the original Etch A Sketch is a registered trademark of a toy manufactured by the Ohio Art company. It was originally invented in the late 1950s by a French electrician who called it the “Telecran” (telescreen) on account of its resemblance to a television. The Etch A Sketch contains a glass screen coated with aluminum powder. Two knobs control a moveable stylus, which scrape away the powder to leave a dark line on a light gray screen. The screen is “reset” by turning the screen upside down and shaking it.

Grab the download package here to check out ZeroXorXdieXskater’s newest application. Thanks again to the developer for all of his hard work.
