In a new report from the NPD Group titled “Online Gaming 20087,” the group shows that the Xbox 360 is the mode widely used console for playing games online. The study indicates the Xbox 360 makes up about 50 percent of the online home console market. It beats out the Nintendo Wii significantly, which lays claim to only about 29 percent of the market. Both the PS2 and the PS3 are well behind, though the PS3 made a major step up from fifth place to third place on the roster. The report also showed that online gamers between the ages of 13 to 17 increased from 22 percent in 2009. The 18 to 34 group, as well as the 35 to 54 group, decreased slightly in percentage this year.
Comments NPD on the study, “This is a testament to the strength of Xbox 360, both overall, and particularly in the online gaming sphere.”
Anita Frazier, industry analyst for NPD, says this of the console-based online gaming market:
“Online gaming is enjoyed by a diverse group of players. The sheer variety of content and ease of access makes online gaming attractive to a much larger demographic than what we typically see in retail.”
