More Words From John Koller: GTA For PSP?

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Grand Theft Auto

John Koller, director of hardware marketing for SCEA, recently weighed in on his impressions of the extremely popular and lucrative Grand Theft Auto series:

“No one should sleep on that franchise. That’s a tremendous franchise for PlayStation in general. We’ve had two [GTA:LCS, GTA:VCS] that are the top two sellers on PSP right now. So, there’s definitely continued conversations with Rockstar on all their brands. That’s nothing that’s left the PlayStation family.”

Says Koller also about a potential PlayStation Portable collaboration with Rockstar and their current relationship:

“To be honest, Rockstar has to manage their business as they see fit. We’re very good partners with them. They just launched ‘The Lost and the Damned‘ for 360, so, they need to make their own business decisions. But we certainly have a tremendous relationship with them and always have.”

Wario Ware Homebrew Arrives For PSP

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Wario Ware Homebrew

The famed underground coder working out of France, jade2293, has released the first version of a nice piece of programming comprising three minigames and based on the WarioWare title released by Nintendo back in 2003. The homebrew is authored in Lua and is available here for download, although we don’t have any notes from the author, a preliminary feature log, or a screenshot of the runtime just yet.

WarioWare was developed initially by Nintendo, and subsequent versions were handled by the company Intelligent Systems; the first title in the WarioWare series was released for the Game Boy Advance. All WarioWare games are actually composed of a series of what Nintendo refers to as “microgames,” all of which last for approximately three to five seconds and must be completed at the risk of losing a life. The microgames are noticeably much shorter in length than the minigames found in the Mario Party series.

All around fans of the PlayStation brand may want to put down their PSPs for just a brief second and check out this exciting-sounding project from developer Krakatos. PCSX2 is an underground emulator for the PlayStation 2 that should be good to run all of your favorite titles for that super-popular console system from the recent past. Check out this version’s changelog:

  • Modified the GIF and SPR. This is an important bugfix, fixes games that were broken since revision 462.
  • Fixed bugs in LDL/LDR instructions; fixing various TLB Miss errors in assorted games (namely ones that worked in the old VM builds).
  • New Feature: Press TAB to toggle the framelimiter on/off (as a substitute for hitting F4 several times). Usable as a “turbo” feature, similar to other emus.
  • Some minor cleanups / correctness fixes to the IPU’s register Read/Write functions.
  • Applied SUPERVU_VIBRANCHDELAY fix to IBGEZ/IBGTZ/IBLEZ/IBLTZ opcodes. ICO SPS will be gone without gamefix now.

Thanks to Krakatos for all of his hard work.

More Convincing Speculation That 2009 Is The Year Of The PSP

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Three Reasons This Could Be the PSP's Year

Top developers and industry persons met this month with Sony in Houston, Texas to discuss the future of the PlayStation brand. Of the many interesting things to emerge from the conference was the noticeable conviction shared by game makers and Sony that big things are in the store for the PlayStation Portable.

According to comments from the conference, a PSP “renaissance” is being spearheaded by three major factors: Rumors of a brand-new, butt-kicking model of the PSP; a significant push towards increasing numbers of digital downloads; and a rise in developer interest for the PSP specifically.

Back in 2006, developer interest for the PSP seemed to be waning due to bottoming-out sales and interest in other systems. In 2007, however, Sony released a slimmer version of the PSP and sales started to pick up. Says John Koller, director of hardware marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment of America, “When we met with developers in 2008, they wanted to know how they could get back into PSP development.” Koller also is quoted as saying that “this is going to be the year of software for the PSP,” and that “we are making a concerted effort for digital distribution.”

Games for the PSP can take up to a year and a half to create, suggesting that the relatively low release number seen in 2008 might underlie a gathering of forces for a slew of new titles in 2009.

Tibia v0.1(Beta) Arrives For PSP

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

TibiaforPSP v0.1(Beta)

Wow, folks: Anyone’s who’s been into massively multiplayer online gaming for the last ten years is sure to recognize the name Tibia, which is one of the longest-running, free, graphical online games. A homebrewer by the name of LuMa out of Germany has begun the substantial task of porting the game to the PSP. TibiaForPSP v0.1 is currently out in a beta version. Check out these words from the developer:

The name of my game, as the title suggests, is called Tibia. The original game Tibia (http://www.tibia.com) is a MMORPG game in which you’re involved in a fantasy world on the Internet with other players and you can solve Ouest, get levels and fight against other players.
I decided to copy of this game for PSP ,because it has a relatively simple 2D graphics and it is cope with Oslib.

Now some data about my Hombrew:

Until now, this Hombrew is only in the beta stage and is also only offline playable ,but I will change this in any case in the next versions .
It feature , however, the following functions:

  • Menu + Background Music
  • Selection between female and male character + naming of the character / account
  • Small map with one quest (58 * 40 fields) and 3 monsters
  • 1 monstertyp
  • 4 armor (or weapons)
  • Many animated objects
  • 2 Spells
  • Fully functional screenshot function
  • Incomplete in-game MP3 player (reads MP3′s from MUSIC-folder)
  • Pause function
  • In-Game Menu + mouse

Now the hotkeys:

In the menu

  • Up / down direction keys
  • Select with X

In the game

  • Movement of the figure with the direction buttons
  • On/Off page menu with SELECT
  • Move the mouse pointer with the joystick
  • LOOK / USE function with R-Hold + X
  • Lifting of arms by the USE function (mouse on weapon -> R-hold + X -> Click to USE)
  • Healing spell with L-Hold + Triangle
  • Fire spell with L-Hold + Circle
  • Creature attacking by clicking on creature (with the mouse)
  • Screenshot with R-Hold + START
  • MP3 player ON/OFF with START
  • Pause with Hold

I think that it was now everything , but you can explor the game yourself(maybe you can find a few more functions … ^ ^)
Have fun testing and do not forget that this project is only in version 0.1 (Beta).

Yours sincerely,
LuMa

PS: I know that until now,it is a bit unilaterally (boring) but it will certainly change with a larger world, more monsters, more weapons and more spells…^^

We’ve played the original game of Tibia on and off since its inception as a cutting-edge online project back in the mid-90s. The port looks promising, and we wish LuMa the best of luck as he continues work on this truly nostalgic project. Mad props.
