OpenBoR v3.0 Build 2191 Is Here

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

OpenBoR v3.0 Build 2191

Check out the newest iteration of OpenBOR for the PSP, fresh up from SamuraiX, the serious homebrew savant who’s been masterminding this project. In case you’re just tuning in, OpenBOR is a continuation of Beats Of Rage, which was started up by the crew over http://www.senileteam.com.

Beats of Rage started as the ultimate tribute project to Streets of Rage, which was a series that originally showed up on the Sega Medadrive and Sega Genesis. Fans of the series anxiously awaited Streets of Rage 4, which never arrived, so the BoR team went ahead and did themselves. Check out these notes from SamuraiX:

Development

“Beats of Rage was created by Senile Team. However, the character sprites and some parts of the backgrounds are taken from ‘the King of Fighters’ games by SNK Playmore. Therefore special thanks go out to SNK Playmore and SEGA who unknowingly helped in creating this game.”

*** Update by SX @ 3-26-09 Build 2191 ***

Features:

  • PSP Release. (Menu @ 95% Complete more to be done)
  • GP2X Release. (Compiles but since I don’t own one I have no clue what issues are)

Fixes:

  • Select Player Screen is now referenced once again by loading order.

Notes:

  • All Old Save files prior to 3.0 are no longer compatible with this PSP/GP2X release. Using them will cause instability and unexpected results.
  • Everyone must use all new files included with this release since menus have been redesigned. Especially PSP Version

PSP Calculette v2 Arrives

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

PSP homebrew - Calculette v2

Up fresh from the French programming paragon, poool, is a calculator application for your PlayStation Portable. It is, ostensibly, a calculator, and this time it’s got trigonometric functionality on top of its standard arithmetic suite. Not much to see in the changelog, but here it is, in all its glory:

Changelog v2:

  • Basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
  • Calculations of Trigonometry
  • Conversion

Now, it’s always a good idea to keep a calculator application handy on your PSP. There are a number of choices available, but perhaps Calculette v2 is the one that best suits your temperament, personality, weight, astrological sign, hair style, choice of major, tendency to recreate, particular skill with the djembe, eye-color, or favorite Jonas brother.

Whatever your reason may be, we encourage you to pick up the download package right here and give Calculette a spin, if for nothing else than simply to promote the development of excellent underground applications like this one. Thanks again to poool for his contribution to the scene.

Another Update For GoblinPSP brings it to v2.3.1.1

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

PSP homebrew: GoblinPSP v2.3.1.1

The definitive PlayStation Portable homebrew application for compressing files just received another bug-fixing update from its developer, the seemingly-omniscient underworld coder, Moscas. GoblinPSP v2.3.1.1 allows PSP users to efficiently manage back-ups of data stored on memsticks. It also takes care of the loading and deleting of a back-up UMD. The new version arrives with a single element on its changelog:

  • Fixed some bugs that arose into the applications menu, causing a loss of reordering of the applications

An important note to keep in mind: If you’re currently running a version of PSPGoblin lower than v2.0.0.0, please make sure to fully uninstall that version prior to installing GoblinPSP v2.3.1.1. This is to ensure your safety and happiness along your incredible journey that is life with a PSP. For new users of the application, this is a great opportunity to try out a clutch piece of homebrew data management software. Get the download package right here to get started.

Again, many thanks to Moscas for all of his hard work.

Agenaworld v1.7 Is A Gnarly Geometry Wars Clone

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

PSP homebrew - Agenaworld v1.7

Coming up steaming hot from the brewers’ cauldron is another nifty-looking space shooter that hearkens again to the mega-popular Geometry Wars. Technically, this is an update to the game, but this is the first time we’ve posted the title here at PSPHacks. Agenaworld v1.7 includes a cool TV-out feature that’s only PSP Slim compatible, but if you’ve got the hardware, we recommend testing it out.

Agenaworld’s developer, the erudite underground implementer, edepot, offers up a quick description of the game for us:

“Basically, you start at Earth, and look at your radar for the purple marker and go there and press triangle button. You should be now at another map. Try visiting different galaxies by following the purple markers (in the radar)”

Please note that, despite not being able to utilize the TV output feature, owners of a PSP Phat will still be able to run Agenaworld v1.7. Props to edepot for his dedication to the homebrew gaming scene.

PopStation PSP v2.0: change eboot save ID, game title and game ID

The dedicated homebrew deacon, SuperFury1, returns in record time with a quick update to PopStation PSP. In case you’re just tuning is, PopStation PSP is a port of an application that lets you convert games to eboot on the PlayStation Portable. In the new version, you can modify the eboot save ID, the game title, and the game ID via data stored in psx.db. Here are the developer’s official notes for this release:

“I have ported the popstation.exe application for the pc to the psp.

popstation is a pc application that converts a PSX ISO/BIN to a PSX EBOOT.

The package can be found on my site. Within the package there’s also a manual (manual.txt).

To install, simply copy the folder in the package to you PSP GAME folder.

“All there’s left is to test it in different firmwares. I know it works under cfw 5.00m33-4 (that’s the one i used).

If tested under a different firmware that isnt below, please post if it works in this topic.”

v2.0: Added a list of psx titles & IDs. It will now change the psx EBOOT save id, game title and game ID, according to what game you select (list is retrieved from psx.db. The psx.db file might be outdated, search Google etc. to find the most recent one).

Tested firmwares:

  • 5.00m33-4
  • 5.00m33-6

Thanks again to SuperFury1 for his work on this project.

It’s Here: The Much-Anticipated iR Shell v5.0

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

We’ve got some excellent news for y’all: The legendary homebrew champion, AhMan, has finally released iR Shell v5.0, which he’s been calling the “advanced multi-tasking” application. The move to version 5.0 is a big leap forward, though the 4.x versions have been plenty powerful themselves. AhMan wrote a ton of release notes for the new version, which we’ll simply post here verbatim. Check ‘em out:

Usage Notes:

  • Before you can use the Advanced Multi-tasking, you’ll need to enable the option “Slim Advanced Multi-tasking” under iR Configurator.
  • You can load 2 Applications to the 2 memory slots in the Slim. Slot 1 is the usual memory area for loading applications (the lower 32MB RAM); while slot 2 is the new memory area (the upper 32MB RAM only available on Slim).
  • By default, the 1st app will be loaded in slot 1, and the 2nd app will load in slot 2 automatically. To force the 1st app to load in slot 2, hold Left-Trigger while lauching an application under the confirmation popup window.
  • The typical app switch toggle “L-Trigger + Select” or the alternate key “Vol Up + Select” will allow you to toggle between the 2 apps and iR Shell. New key combos “L-Trigger + Note” or “Vol Up + Note” will allow you to switch between the 2 apps without going back to iR Shell screen. Pls note pressing the Note button alone (without L-Trigger) will act as the screen capture button. The alternate Vol Up combo keys perform exactly the same as L-Trigger key and is provided as an alternative.
  • Normally, when you exit 1 of the 2 apps, it will cause the PSP to reboot, meaning you’ll also lose the other running app. This can be resolved by adding unloading support into the application itself. However, this will require modification of the app to perform resource cleanup and self-unloading upon exit. All iR Shell bundled plugins have been enhanced to support unloading, such that they can be terminated without affecting the other running app. To exit these plugins gracefully, use the exit function build into the app itself. For example, to exit bookr, press START and choose Exit menu item. iR Shell disables the standard Home exit menu while 2 apps are running. To exit both apps together, use “Home + Square” instead.

Compatibility Notes:

  • Not all apps can be loaded to Slot 2. There’re two types of program binary format for PSP, static ELF and relocatable PRX. Static ELF uses fix memory address and can’t be relocated. Hence, they will only work when loading in slot 1. If you try to load a static ELF in slot 2, you’ll get an error code “0x800200D9″. PRX can be loaded in either slot 1 or 2. To convert a homebrew from ELF to PRX, you’ll need to re-compile it with BUILD_PRX=1 and set the heap size with PSP_HEAP_SIZE_KB(-800) in the source file. Most static ELF homebrews can be converted to relocatable PRX simply by recompilation.
  • There is a limitation on the PSP AVC hardware decoder which is for video playback. It cannot be accessed by more than 1 application; which means you can’t have 2 applcations running together if both of them access the AVC hardware decoder.
  • The bundled plugins should be able to coexist with most other apps; with the exception of the PPA plugin which can only coexist with another app which doesn’t use the AVC hardware decoder.
  • You can’t have both slots loading UMD/ISOs, due to there is only 1 physical UMD drive and ISOs are simply emulating the UMD.
  • PS1 games take exclusive use on the audio hardware. As a result, it will be incompatible with other apps that use audio.
  • The launch XMB function may not be stable for most commercial games due to resource conflicts. However, it should be pretty compatible with most homebrews. On the other hand, the Sony Web Browser should work with most commercial games & homebrews. To browse Internet while running another app, you can use the iR Shell bundled htmlviewer which is the Sony Web browser.
  • If an app is built with PSP_LARGE_MEMORY flag and you’re trying to load it in slot 1 (first app), it will use all Slim memory and you won’t be able to load a 2nd app. To allow it to co-exist with other apps, you’ll need to load it in slot 2.
  • This will probably be incompatible with DA’s LEDA if you’re trying to run 2 apps requring 2 different kernels.
  • This Advanced Multi-tasking feature is incompatible with Interlaced TV Out for slim due to insufficient memory. Progressive TV Out should work fine.
  • If you get an error “0x800200D9″ while loading an app to slot 2, it’s a static ELF and you’ll need to load it in slot 1. That is, reverse the order of the 2 applications you’re loading.

Additional Note
:

  • The bundled bookr plugin is based on the original v0.71. If you want to use the recent v0.81 mod by Nguyen Chi Tam, you can download it from www.ishell.org forum.
  • You can find most of the plugin source code in www.irshell.org plugin forum. If you want to add unloading support to a homebrew, you can refer to these samples.

Special thanks to:

  • Dark_AleX for the M33 custom firmwares and his assistance during iR Shell development.
  • Tyranid and other developers in ps2dev.org for creating the pspsdk.
  • F34R, Osgeld, StoneCut and other moderators who keep irshell.org running and providing technical support to the community.
  • All iR Shell beta testers, donators, skins & plugin contributors.
  • Credits:
  • M33 Custom firmware & popsloader are developed by Dark_AleX/M33.
  • remotejoy & usbhostfs are developed by Tyranid.
  • iR Shell bundled skins & plugins are developed by their corresponding authors.
  • iR Shell Manual & FAQs are written by StoneCut.

Big “thank yous” to, AhMan, and also to the entire support team to whom AhMan sent his thanks, for being so generous to the homebrew scene – we thoroughly appreciate your efforts!
