For some time now, we’ve been gathering rumbling verbiage surrounding the “year of the PSP” rumor – you know, that little piece of portent pie suggesting an incredible spike in PSP sales and game releases in 2009. According to the pre-release speculators, it very well may be, based solely on the number of titles slated to drop throughout the year. Well, the brand manager for the PlayStation Portable, John Koller, has made it publicly known that he – and the rest of the folks carefully overseeing the fate of the PSP at Sony – are optimistic about hardware sales for this year; in fact, he predicts an increase in sales for both the PSP and the PlayStation 3 as high as 15%.
Sony has been guarding their fiscal report for 2008, though its numbers should be revealed in the next few weeks. We’re operating under the assumption that the numbers look good, and that the outlook is even better. Here’s what Koller had to say to VGH247 with regard to the PlayStation Portable:
“We’ve been very bullish on PSP. We had our largest sales year ever last year, and we’d look to go about 10-15 percent north of that this year. It’s for a number of reasons, but primarily because of the entertainment packs and line-up of software that’s coming. The software line-up alone should drive a lot of hardware sales.”
Outlook good, and getting better. We’ve got our fingers crossed for a spectacular rest of 2009.
