Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

PSP homebrew - PSN License Manager v0.17

Emerging from the depths of the protoplasmic homebrew swamps (of which we’ve all grown peculiarly fond) is a little itty-bitty update to a little itty-bitty application by the name of PSN License Manager. Its developer, the tremendous, startlingly inverted underworld codesetter, Light_AleX, has delivered unto us a few new tweaks and adjustments for the new version.

PSN License Manager v0.17 offers up a new “toggle USB” feature that permits direct access to the memory stick without having to return to the XMB after a backup is successfully executed.

We encourage each and every one of y’all to thoroughly examine the readme file, in order that you become properly educated in the use of this particular programming package. Perchance you’d prefer to pick up the piece right here, so we’ll proudly present it post-haste.

Nand Currency v1.00 Is A Promising New Application

Monday, April 13th, 2009

PSP Homebrew: Nand Currency 1.00

We’re taking a look at Nand Currency v1.00, a little home cooked utility that promises to facilitate a process known as “nand dumping.” Now, in case you’re new to the term, we’ll deliver unto you a bit of background information before you move forward:

A NAND dump is a physical back-up of a little chip inside your PlayStation Portable. The chip stores all of the files that your PSP relies on to properly start up; namely, the IPL, the lflash, and the IDStorage. A healthy NAND dump can go a long towards quickly and efficiently unbricking your PSP.

Nand Currency makes the NAND dump a quick and painless procedure. Its developer, the cerebral PlayStation technician known as Angelsniper45, will continue to work on the application in the hopes of creating a gnarly, feature-rich and well-optimized NAND manipulator that’ll go down in homebrew history as one of the most clutch tools of all time. For now, we recommend that you check out this first build, and send vibes of encouragement by way of the International Cybertubular Megawebular Highway Of Informaticals (ICMHOI) to the developer in order that he feels well wished and heartily supported along his incredible journey.

Monday, April 13th, 2009

The unstoppable underground überprogrammer, Mr305, has just released a monstrous update to his homebrew masterpiece, TweakDISPLAY. The home-cooked program hacks into your PlayStation Portable (with surgical precision and safety) to produce some truly amazing visual effects; for instance, you can flip the display upside down, deploy some gnarly visual filters, shift the color spectrum, and do a whole bunch of eye-boggling tricks that’ll get your friends jealous and make your brain bleed with excitement. Check out this rather meaty changelog for TweakDISPLAY v1.0.1151:

  • VshMenu Now works.
  • NEW EFFECT: Added Flip Mode 30 Stable; No memory leaks, no crashes, No screen artifacts, however 30fps.
  • (Note: Once you go over onto the experimental mode, the PSP is may crash at any time, so, going back to this effect wont help.)
  • SPEED BOOST for “Brightness Boost” effect: +15-20fps. (Keys: TRIANGLE+SQUARE + Analog Up/Down)
  • SPEED BOOST for “Contrast Boost” effect: +15-20fps
  • Bug fix: In Flip Mode, When the effect was toggled to off, the keys werenot mapped back correctly; Fixed.

  • Changed controls: Now uses TRIANGLE + LTRIGGER/RTRIGGER to change effect; the controls are “invisible”, wont affect the what’s happening on screen.
  • Snappier responce when Brigtness is adjusted in brightness mode.
  • Miscellaneous code cleanups.

Bitmap Hunter v3 Encourages You To Wreak Havoc On Images

Monday, April 13th, 2009

PSP homebrew - Bitmap Hunter v3

The inspired anarchical implementer, Art, has just cooked up a truly interesting piece of ‘brew that’s designed from the top down to allow y’all to find and edit monochrome and 256-color bitmaps that are lurking within firmware files. Unlike older, but similar, homebrew applications, Bitmap Hunter does allow you to make changes to the images directly.

Quick lesson, in case you’re just tuning in: A bitmap is a type of image file format that’s used to store images with a specific color depth in a lossless format; bitmaps are quite close to raw image data, although they generally include header information that’s relevant to file readers. Unlike vector images, bitmaps (which are forms of raster images, the  functional opposite of a vector image) cannot scale to an arbitrary resolution without a significant and noticeable loss of quality (they’ll just turn into unrecognizable patches of blocks).

This is absolutely a clutch piece of code, and recommend that any of you who’s got a hankering for tinkering grab the download package right here and check it out. We offer up our sincere thanks and congratulations to Art, without whom we’d probably never muster up the brazen circuitry to discover and annihilate images to serve our own dubious ends.

MaTiAz Conjures Up A Globe-Shaking New Exploit

Monday, April 13th, 2009

5.03 TIFF Hello World

It was only a matter time before it happened: The globally respected homebrew phenomenon and transcendental champion of the scene, MaTiAz, had discovered a brand new exploit for to get completely out of our minds about. For now, the exploit seems only to work on the PSP Fat, but MaTiAz promises forthcoming compatibility with the Slim. Here’s what the intrepid source scientist has to say about his shocking discovery:

Hello World for PSP firmware 5.03

  • The days of TIFF based exploits aren’t long gone, at least not yet
  • Here’s the third TIFF exploit for the PSP, enjoy.
  • Just copy the files to the memory stick root, disconnect USB and go to photo menu.
  • Don’t dismiss the exploit even if it doesn’t work on the first time, it’s *very* unstable.
  • You might get it working on the first time, but you might as well have to try it 20 times!
  • The h.bin is loaded to 0×08800000, and the text address of paf.prx is passed in $a0 to the binary code. You can then trick out function imports, like for example sceDisplayWaitVblankStart:

sceDisplayWaitVblankStart = (void*)(paf_addr+0x15F068);

  • This release works _only_ on fat PSPs. The slim version will come out later.
  • I’m not gonna include a list of credits here, I’ll just forget some important names and then I’ll be screwed :P The people who need to be credited will know it anyway.

Have fun!

P.S. Just wait a few days, there’s a bit of awesomeness coming up.

- MaTiAz”

This is an exploit in its early stages, but this is well worth checking out right away, despite its cherubic infancy. Thanks wholeheartedly to MaTiAz, who proves yet again that he’s one of those most valuable assets the PlayStation Portable underground scene has ever clutched in its sinewy claws.

PSPWrite v1.2.1 Complements Your Otherworldly Hypergraphia

Monday, April 13th, 2009

PSP homebrew - PSPWrite v1.2.1

The acclaimed underworld algorithm archnemesis, Zx-81, is back with an update to his critically revered homebrew text editor, PSPWrite. With the jump to PSPWrite v1.2.1, Zx-81 offers up a clutch read-only mode that enables the PlayStation Portable to function as a book reader. Also, you’ll be able to work closely even with the more gargantuan of text files in both conventional DOS and Unix modes. Check out a few words from the developer himself, who does wish us all a Happy Easter, to boot:

Here is a new version of PSPWrite the text editor for PSP.

  • It permits to edit even huge text file, in both dos and unix mode, using iso8859-1 (8bits) characters encoding.
  • All iso8859-1 characters are present in the “Danzeff like” virtual keyboard.
  • The IR keyboard support is based on the work of Harald Fielker.
  • It has been developed on linux for Firmware 1.5 and 5.x-m33, and for the IR keyboard part it has been tested using a Targus Universal IR Wireless keyboard on PSP FAT.

What’s new then in 1.2.1 ? very few things :

  • Add read-only mode to use pspwrite as a book reader
  • Fix issue with sleep mode (psp crash)
  • How to use it ? Everything is in the README.txt file.
  • Sources are included, and this package is under the GNU public license, read COPYING.txt file for more information about it.

Thanks again to Zx-81, without whose diligent  efforts in the arduous struggle of underworld homebrewing we would never have such a delightful treasure as this one.

Sony Moves On Patent For PSP-Controlled Car

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Sony patents PSP-controlled spy car

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe just registered for a new patent that lays the framework for a system in which the PlayStation Portable will be used to operate a camera-mounted car remotely.

The system allows the car to move by way of a wireless connection to a PlayStation Portable. The environment is monitored by a mounted camera, which transmits information back to the PSP; users can thereby negotiate terrain. On the control side, the PSP can be used to capture and record video. Visual data can then be uploaded to websites and shared via the Internet. Apparently, Sony also has plans to outfit the car with a speaker and a microphone for further environmental interaction.

Another interesting element of the patent is its designation of “augmented reality zones,” which essentially are pre-determined areas with a virtual perimeter that allows for users to maneuver freely within its borders, but no further. So, users could set up a race track and race cars without fear of crashing inappropriately into obstacles outside of the scope of the reality zone. Another fascinating part of the technology would allow the PlayStation Portable to render real-life objects as computer-generated images. So, while the cars are racing around on planet Earth between road cones, the PlayStation Portable could show those cones as gnarly extraterrestrial pylons.

Gnarly.
