Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince To Grace E3 Fest

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Electronic Arts, the makers of the Harry Potter version of video games has dropped the full trailer on the Internet days before the big E3 fest. I am quite excited about this new game seeing as I am fans of everything Potter. Yep, so Muggles be thankful for the “Boy Who Lived” who will grace E3 with perhaps even Hedwig in tow, and his wand made of phoenix feather and holly.

But before you start bashing the graphics, remember that the Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince is on different video platforms, and it got versions of every gaming portable out there—the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP, DS, Mobile, Mac and PC. The video released appears to be from the Wii because of the graphics and boxarts we saw.

In this new Harry Potter, you can improve your Quidditch skills for the Hogwarts Cup or spend time concocting potions with Professor Slughorn. You can also join your House’s Duelling Club, improve skills, take on other Houses and use those improved ability to battle the Inferi and the Death Eaters.

The game will take you to location never before seen in the Harry Potter franchise of movies. This is the closest we can get to the world of wizards and Hogwarts as described in the books.

New PSP Version Of SK8 Dice

Friday, May 29th, 2009

PSP homebrew - SK8 DICE for PSP

There was a time when Sk8 Dice is a mere iPhone application that friends, and friend of friends, would borrow iPhones just so they can play with the app. But then, Exogan brings us the Playstation Portable version of the infamous game.

Sk8 Dice for PSP is based on real dices and is specially made for all skaters out there. It basically has the same rules as that of the iPhone app only that now, you can download and install it in your PSPs (not sure about the models that this could support).

Sk8 Dice is a sports application developed by Sourcebits for the iPhone, which uses the Unity 3D Framework. Essentially, what it does is that it lets you recognize a trick by rolling the dice so you could be ready to roll on your skates.

To install it in your PSPs, simply put the file in the GAME folder and you’re ready to rock and roll.

No More Film Adaptation For Castlevania

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Castlevania film adaptation not happening anymore

Even before it officially started, the film adaptation for Castlevania will no longer push through. According to sources, the production of the film has been “sucked out dry” so the producers decided to cut it.

Supposedly, it was to be a Paul W.S. Anderson production (also the one responsible for the Resident Evil series) and a Sylvain White direction. But as the directorial job was passed on to someone so does the production started it way to hell.

The film adaptation for Castlevania was first announced in 2007 and has gone through lots of ups and downs, including being affected by the writer’s strike middle of last year.

The story apparently was supposed to show the origins of Dracula and the rising of the Belmont Clan, who would soon be the vampire-slaying family responsible for saving the rest of humanity.

I was never really a fan of adapting game stories to film. I think we’ve had enough of those in Resident Evil but still some patrons of Castlevania might be disheartened to know they would no longer see the characters in the big screen. But hey, who knows maybe in the future we can have us some Castlevania film.

Free PSP Video Converter With The Release Of PSPVC v3.71

PSPVC v3.71 Released: Free PSP Video Converter

With the newly released Playstation Portable Video Converter for Windows—created by Nick—it would be so much easy to convert all your videos into a format that could be read by any ordinary PSPs. As long as the videos will be converted in a PSP-compatible format then these converted videos are good to go with a PSP.

Just with some click of your mouse, you can now convert the videos straight from your computer hardware instead of relying to some old, outdated online video converter.

PSPVC v3.71 changes:

  • Added a new updated version of FFmpeg
  • Added another video-display in preview-mode so you can compare the result with the original picture before converting
  • PSPVC can now be changed into 40 languages
  • Unlocked the bitrate for OFW users
  • The “Activate Subtitles” check box will now be activated automatically if the default language exist among the streams
  • Added an “AUTO” option to the “audio HZ” selection box
  • Improved the random screenshot/icon function
  • PSPVC will now share the same process priority as FFMPEG for better response
  • Changed the PSPVC default config to use the “Constant Quality” option for higher quality
  • Many bug fixes…
  • See the complete changelog here: http://pspvc.nswardh.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=334

The PSPVC v3.71 is compatible with Windows (I don’t know about Mac users) so it will be easier to use as most of us are still on Windows-based system.

DJ Drops Up For Grabs

PSP homebrew - DJ Drops: last build

Daaa57150 is on to bigger things so he does not have time anymore to rebuild a new version of the DJ Drops. So if anyone else likes to pick up developing this homebrew, the final release can be found here including the source code.

This game is not yet finished so those who would want to develop it is in for some time.

Developer notes:

What’s inside the demo:

Everything I’ve ever made for Mega Drops (1 & 2) and the levels I was working on for DJ Drops:

  • Mega Drops: levels “Frozen”, “DJ Beat” and “Mechanical Groundwork”
  • Mega Drops 2: levels “Tetris”, “Project Sexy” (slightly improved) and “8 bits”

DJ Drops:

  • The only level I consider finished is called “Underwater”, this one is fun!
  • The other almost finished level is “S Soup”; gameplay is 100% done.
  • The other levels are either missing graphics or gameplay:
  • Graphics-less levels (playable): “Turn and Burn” and “Voltigeur”
  • Graphics-less levels (unplayable): “Bioteck Projekt” and “Mu Song”
  • Gameplay-less levels (ie unplayable): “Cathedral” and “Chiptunes”

Just in case anyone would want to build up this game, feel free to let us know here as we’ll post the latest developments. Can’t wait to try this one out.

The Revival Of The TicTacToe v0.4

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

PSP Homebrew - TicTacToe v0.4

Who ever said that the Playstation Portable is only for action-packed games like the Tekken series and EA sports? I for one have always been fond of playing those classic board games that have been turned into an instant sensation the moment they were “computerized.”

Broodjekaas92 has just released his first homebrew game for the PSP—the TicTacToe v0.4. Now you can pass the time without having to combat all those muscled characters in your screen. It’s like playing Snakes and Ladders in your living rooms, albeit more modern and convenient.

The v0.4 requires CFW 5.00 M33-6 so make sure you already have this one right inside that tiny gadget of yours. Here are the features of TicTacToe:

  • its fully working
  • you can change the colours of the players in the option menu

This is not quite that bad for a first Lua game… and also for a first-timer. I’m sure we’ll see better projects and homebrews from Broodjekaas92 in the future. Keep it up

Shing and Yuri—New Characters In Action

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

We have released and confirmed before that Shing and Yuri is included in the list of the new characters that would be included in the new Tales of VS version. But now we finally have the video of them bringing pain to the game with their Artes.

The beating and the kicking comes after some time, but at least we’ll get to see how Shing and Yuri would add up to the already existing characters in the current roster of Tales of VS. These two will surely add more color to the already exciting and action-packed game. Check the videos below.

Do note that whatever list you have in your hands of the current character count, this does not change it any other way… or add to it, for that matter.

So far, the latest list puts to 20 the new characters. And with 35 confirmed new characters, there’s still 15 more we haven’t seen or heard about. Glenn M. of PSPupdate is betting that Senel Coolidge—the Demon-fisting hero from Legendia—would be included in the list.

Crisp And Clean PSP Theme Project 7

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

So finally another Playstation Portable theme for my new gadget. I’ve been wanting something clean and crisp for ages. XanderChaos’ new creation, the Project 87, is a nice break out from the usual psychedelic themes out there.

To use this CTF theme, you need a CFW 5.00M33 or any update along with the latest CXMB plugin. Also, the downloaded theme is on a RAR file so you might probably need Winrar or 7Zip for an application (that is, if you don’t have one already).

The CTF file, by the way, when downloaded goes to your memory stick at the PSP theme.

Basically, the interface is kind of like that Vista theme where plank of woods extends to a lake overlooking another island. It’s solitary in mood and best to be used in thinking games rather in those fight action games.

The Project 7 is formatted in CTF, PTF and Flash0 for 5.00. Do check the download link below to try out this new theme from XanderChaos. It wouldn’t rock your world like some previous works but it would surely bring something out of you—what with it’s blue-based background.

Custom Firmware Enabler v1.0 Released For The PSP

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Custom Firmware Enabler v1.0 Released: ISO/UMD Backup Support via ChickHEN

I’ve got some good news, and of course, some bad news too. First off, Xenogears and Becus25 have finally released their first version of the Custom Firmware Enabler. This would finally allow select features to be in the Playstation Portable—those features that are most common in custom firmwares. Beware though that it does not include the POPs and the recovery console.

Here’s the even better stuff: the Custom Firmware Enabler v1.0 includes ISO support, which are backups of your legitimately owned UMDs). These ISOs are now working with handhelds sporting the TA-088v3 motherboard.

However, and here’s the bad stuff: PSP 3000 users cannot use this (sorry, cous). But hey, who knows maybe in the future you’ll get your own ISO support too.

Here’s the how to use the Firmware Enabler:

  1. Copy the CFWEnabler folder to your ms0:/PSP/GAME/ directory.
  2. Run ChickHEN R2 to enable homebrew.
  3. Start the app called “CFW Loader for ChickHEN”. The first time it will ask you to install the CFW modules to flash0 by pressing circle; then press “X” to start.

By the way, the CFWEnabler can write to Flash0. So be very cautious while using this PSP homebrew. Remember NOT to turn of your PSPs while the modules are flashing.
