Arakawa: Dissidia is good enough to convince even pirates to buy it

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Dissidia: Final Fantasy

Everybody’s got something to say about PSP piracy. Understandably enough, developers and publishers see the issue as a huge detriment. Dissidia: Final Fantasy director Takeshi Arakawa believes, however, that as bad as the piracy situation on the PSP may be, Dissidia is good enough to convince gamers to actually buy the game:

We are really worried about this issue [piracy]… extremely worried.

The issue of piracy is quite concerning on PS as well and our basic stance is that it’s unfortunate, but what’s been done has been done and we can’t do much about it. We want to stick to a policy of making a game that the player would be proud of owning, so even if you play the pirated version, the game should be good enough to convince them that they should purchase the game. So long as we manage to do that, the issue doesn’t really exist.

Arakawa has previously mentioned that they’ll be keeping an eye on Western sales as well in order to gauge the viability of a Dissidia sequel. He pointed to two things that helped Dissidia reach massive numbers in Japan: a Christmas release and hardcore Final Fantasy fans. We already have the latter, and since there’s no clear-cut release for the game yet, we may very well get the former too — although I seriously hope not.

Netfront Internet Browser Beta 4: ChickHEN support, Password Protection, more

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Netfront Internet Browser Beta 4

With ChickHEN finally enabling homebrew for PSP-3000s, some of the more prominent homebrew projects out there are now stepping up with some compatibility updates. And because we all love unlocking some RAM while browsing on our PSPs, Team P86 has released the latest beta version for Netfront Internet Browser, and sure enough, it can now run on PSP-3000s with ChickHEN.

Aside from HEN support, beta 4′s got some serious bang for the buck too, even if you’re not using a PSP-3000, including password protection and improved stability. This version works on PSP-1000, -2000, and -3000, just so long as you’re on 5.00 M33-6 or ChickHEN.

Here’s the full changelog and some additional notes:

Beta 4 – What’s New

  • Annoying prompt was removed.
  • HEN support was added(Also PSP-3000 support)
  • The theme was changed(EBOOT music, background etc…)
  1. We won’t remove music etc. because they don’t matter…
  • It is more stable.
  • Password Protected Version is added…

–About 5.03 HEN support–

  • On ChickHEN, HighMemMod always uses the same memory on all PSPs(32 MB). Because the extra RAM parts of Slim and Brite has been locked by Sony. HighMemMod would use all memory if M33 files was added to ChickHEN…

–About Password Protection–

  • Copy the ProtectedHtmlMax_Eng folder to PSP/GAME.
  • To use this feature, you should change your parental level to 10 or you should change it to OFF!
  • And you can add password to your browser for safety(XMB>Settings>Secur ity Settings)

–About VSH Plugin–

  • Copy vsh folder to your flash0 and Enjoy…

Make sure you guys take a look at the readme and drop by the forums if you need any help.

Homebrew history was made this week when Davee and Team Typhoon finally released ChickHEN, finally breaching the PSP-3000′s defenses and injecting homebrew into the lives of PSP-2000 owners whose units are equipped with the previously unhackable TA-088v3 motherboard.

5.03 ChickHEN Homebrew Enabler finally released *UPDATE*

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

5.03 ChickHEN

Hear that? That’s the sound of homebrew aficionados booting up their PSP-3000s and getting ready to finally run some homebrew on the thing. Why? Davee and Team Typhoon have finally released the 5.03 HEN, that’s why. Before you go download it, though, read this description from Davee first.

What does the ChickHEN do?

ChickHEN as a Homebrew Enabler that allows the execution of homebrew via the PSP XMB. Running via a vulnerability in the lib TIFF the launcher takes advantage of the system by performing a kernel exploit and rebooting into a homebrew enabled enviroment. The ChickHEN remains active until the PSP is fully reset in which case official firmware loads from the flash. ChickHEN unlike other HEN’s doesn’t touch the flash0 and resides completely in memory. The h.bin supplied in this download consists of a loader and systemex, which is a inversed order of systemctrl and rebootex

What ChickHEN does NOT do?

  • Run ISO, CSO or any other form of UMD backup.
  • Run PSX Games
  • Touch The Flash of your beloved PSP
  • Magically allow the use of Custom Firmware
  • Load plugins

Make sure to read the readme file included in the download before you go messing about with the HEN too.

Crytek: Free Radical working on “dream projects”

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Crytek

The acquisition by Crytek seems to be going great for Free Radical, er, Crytek UK. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has revealed that they’ve pretty much given the developer free reign in what projects they’re pursuing.

While remaining secretive about the dev studio’s new project, the Crytek CEO said in an interview with Develop that they are “working with Free Radical on things that they always dreamed to do.”

“We are providing the team a roadmap and the chance to grow,” he added, “which is why we were picked as a partner, and not anyone else.”

So, anybody up for a Timesplitters 4 using the new CryEngine? It was one of the games Free Radical was reportedly working on before they became Crytek UK. Hopefully we hear something more concrete about the studio’s new projects at E3.
