PSP Mario: The New Worlds v0.01 Released

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

PSP Mario - The New Worlds v0.01

This is the first version of a PSP homebrew game that coder Dan369 has been working on for quite some time. The video posted above is the old version of the PSP Mario, so don’t be confused. This new version is a total recode from that old update.

Here are the features of this version:

- Classic HUD

- Complete mario/luigi animations (including death animations, turning animations & flag animations)

- Full goomba A.i

- Tilemap levels

- Now completely uses tile based collision.

- Play as Luigi or Mario

- Brick Block & ? Block animations.

- Classic sound effects.

- And loads more smaller touches.

The coder used remote Joylite for this update as it records at 30fps. PSP Mario runs at 60fps. For controls: press Start for pause/un-pause. X for jump, R trigger for run (only when holding down the trigger will the player run, otherwise it walks) and analog left and right direction for moving.

According to Dan369, future updates will include complete sequence ending, fixed bugs, coins, score system, more levels and more sound effects.

Custom Firmware 6.00 Decrypted

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

PSP firmware 6.00 decrypted

The official custom firmware 6.00, which has been released for the Sony PSP, has just been decrypted by the GEN group. So remember that about a couple of days ago, we posted an article about the 6.00? Well, here it is now… decrypted and will soon be ready for release too (hopefully).

Although the decryption is still on its first step, I am expecting that there will be some genuine change in terms of compatibility with games and other portables.

According to the GEN team: “The first stage of the discovery of 6.00 has therefore been reached and our team of developers fetishes will therefore continue its investigations to try to bring us more information about this topic. Note that Dark_Alex said he was not working on 6.00 M33 and that for the moment, no public 6.00 GEN is still expected.”

We have heard that there will be no M33 for the 6.00, so better kill your hopes for that one. But as with any other decryptions the GEN group have made in the past, I bet that we will see the light of the day when more details are revealed about this new project they’ve got going on in there.

AVEC GPS v4 Released

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

AVEC GPS V4 (1.50 Kernel)

If you’re still not content with the last update of AVEC GPS (the third installment) well, here is something that can start your day right. Homebrew coder Art just released his latest version of AVEC GPS (fourth version) that can “track up” display mode. Above is a video posted in YouTube on how this amazing homebrew app works.

Here are the changes for this version:

- Lines for roads increase in thickness at the two highest zoom levels for street maps.

- Some improvement to map edge detection routine to accommodate large base maps of entire continents.

- Fixed bug causing two images to be saved for every frame when save frames option is enabled.

- Zoom level is auto set to high when GPS mode is enabled, but can still be adjusted.

- GPS parser runs in separate thread so GPS mode is faster, and buttons are responsive in GPS mode.

- Changed altitude field to speed (kilometers per hour) in GPS information bar.

- Intro screen is only shown once on first use, then program starts in the file browser screen.

- Serial port can be restarted if plug is pulled out in GPS mode by turning GPS mode off and on again.

- Fixed option to show points of interest in GPS mode. This option was present in V3, but did not work.

- Fixed config loader to prevent program starting in GPS mode, even if saved in configuration menu. Starting in GPS mode caused a problem. This issue may be resolved later to allow starting in GPS mode.

- Implemented a track up display option in GPS mode so map appears to move in the direction of the vehicle.

- Implemented map rotation mode using the analogue joystick to rotate the map when GPS mode is off.

- Implemented image sequence player for playback of previously captured image sequences.

- Added show grid and canvas size options to configuration menu.

- Various other improvements.

To install the AVEC GPS v4, you will be needing a PSP that sports the 1.50 kernel. If you have any question regarding this release, check out previously posted articles about the AVEC GPS. I am sure you will find lots of information about this app there.

Sony Will Be Revealing New Disagaea Title At TGS 09

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Sony showing off new Disgaea title, more at TGS 09

Sony has just released the final list for the games that they will be featuring in the coming TGS 09. The list that I will post here is the complete enumeration of the game titles that will be on the show (although not playable) as soon as the TGS starts rolling. There’s a brand new Disagaea title and a PSP remake, Thexder, that has been widely rumored before.

From Sony’s press release, this looks to be pretty promising for a show:

- Angel Senki (PS3)

- PixelJunk Shooter (PS3)

- Thexder Neo (Square Enix, PSP)

- Crystal Defenders (Square Enix, PSP)

- Gravity Crush (Sony, PS3)

- Hustler King (Sony, PS3)

- Fat Princess (PS3)

- LocoRoco Midnight Carnival (PSP)

- Play x Catalog (Sony, PSP)

- x-Radar Portable (Sony Marketing, PSP)

- Disgaea Infinite (Nippon Ichi, PSP)

All these titles will be in Sony’s Playstation Network Zone. That means that we can assume that these titles will soon make the rounds in PSN.

MTN’s Graph: A Simple Game With Real Challenge

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Graph

If you want to enjoy a fairly simple game that is not at all mind boggling, then try this new homebrew game called the Graph. The game is similar to Peg Jump in terms of its simplicity, although Graph also poses a real challenge every time you progress to its different levels.

The concept of this game is simple enough to grasp: start where you see the red dot then move the cursor to a connecting dot–that will then rid the line between the two dots. Really, it’s just like that old game Connect The Dots. Once you have managed to eliminate all the lines, you can proceed to the next level.

With this download, you will also be able to get the Graph Level Editor, which maker MTN generously included in the pack. The Editor will allow you to create your own levels in the game.

EBootr Beta Released

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

PSP homebrew - Ebootr Beta

Indrora, a homebrew coder, released this beta version of EBooter–a replacement for PBP Unpacker that allows you to read and edit your PSP’s PBP files.

This homebrew application is a replacement for PBP Unpacker that is written in the C language against the .NET 3.5 Runtime. If your PC is up to date, you should be fine. And if not, better download it from the Microsoft website except when copying data from large Eboots. “On my 2.1Ghz box, it took ~10 seconds to create an eboot off of Final Phantasy Origins (keeping only DATA.PSAR and DATA.PSP and PARAM.SFO),” Indrora said.

The download pack includes Indrora’s Eboot library reader source code so that would be surely helpful for those of you who like tweeking about things like this app.

PSPConstructor Lets You Create Homebrew Apps/Games Easily

PSPConstructor

Are you a striving homebrew coder? If you are, better get in line with downloading this new app from cbarox. The PSPConstructor allows you to create homebrew apps or games with little or no programming language knowledge. You can easily point and click your way to creating useful homebrew applications with this.

Some features of this application:

- Hardware accelerated 2D rendering including scaling, rotations and colour blending.

- Geometry shapes rendering, including rectangle, circle, polygons and thick lines.

- Loading PNG, JPEG and GIF.

- Advanced multiple emitter and key frame based particle system.

- Bitmap fonts.

- Stereo WAV playback.

- Hardware MP3 decoding on PSP.

- Port of HGE helper classes: hgeParticleSystem, hgeDistortionMesh and hgeFont.

The program uses Visual Studio 2008′s devenv command line to compile your game under the Visual Studio 2008 environment. It uses the JGE++ to run your created homebrew game or app under Windows programs. You can then transfer it to your PSP after proving its performance.

LuaPlayer Euphoria v6 Released

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

PSP homebrew - LuaPlayer Euphoria v6

A new update for the LuaPlayer Euphoria was recently released by homebrew coder Zack. This latest version is packed with ultra cool features, bugs fixes and lots of changes.

The complete changelog for the LuaPlayer Euphoria v6 is:

- Ir, Sio and Font functions removed. (first two are redundant and the font Function is just too slow for practical usage.) IntraFont is standard now, and there is a ttf to pgf gui converter included with the download (located in the tools folder) . Bitmap font support will be added later.

- USB connection bug is fixed.

- LPE no longer uses the boot.lua and system/system.lua set up. It now automatically loads “index.lua” from the root directory. So you don’t have to include the System folder anymore. Your main/starting script must be named “index.lua” however.

- TV Out support. Requires no functions/code to be added by you. Just set your PSP to output to your TV (under system settings) then when you launch your script it will automatically output to the tv.

- Quit via home button now actually exits to the xmb rather than crash your psp (as far as I can tell…. tested with a few scripts).

- Eboot size reduced significantly. From 1.7mb to 1.5mb.

- Error messages greatly improved. Now shows the function that caused the error message and the required arguments for the function.

- Various code cleanups across the board.

- A few of the samples from the original LuaPlayer have been converted to LuaPlayer Euphoria. You will find those along with a few new samples/example (code) in the samples folder.

- New eboot art. Derived from digitalBlasphemy preview sample. Using pixelMator. This will be the eboot art from now on. I have actually saved and made a backup of the editable image file this time.

New functions / function changes:

- Controls.read() — Will check for input and the FPS will be locked to 60fps.

- Controls.readPeek() — Will check for input and the FPS will be uncapped.

- System.draw() — Initializes the GU for rendering. Must be called before any blitting/drawing to the screen. (And in a loop)

- System.endDraw() — End’s the GU and syncs. Must be called at the end of any blitting/drawing to the screen. (And in a loop)

- * screen:slowClear() — If your having problems with the screen not clearing correctly and cannot fix it ( using the standard screen:clear() ), I suggest you use this. (Note : It is slower than using the standard screen:clear() so only use if there is no alternative)

The functions have replaced both System.startGu() and System.endGu() for simpler names that are easier to remember and much less confusing.

Testing Joystick Angle

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Joystick Angle Test

Ever gotten confused why your joystick doesn’t seem to work the way you want it to? Well, there’s a serious lack of applications that test these kind of problems, so it’s a big surprise that homebrew coder Art released new ‘brew that does exactly that.

The Joystick Angle Test is a button tester type of application that tests the angle of the joystick. Art, the coder, made this to test the 2D rotation of his own PSP joystick. But if you’re thinking that it can also measure the magnitude of the joystick angle, which is the distance from the center of the dead zone, then you’re doubly wrong. Unfortunately for us, Art has not been able to include some more useful features in this app.

Download below, and try this out for yourself.
