Best Buy And Target Foresee More Layoffs Despite Collapse Of Circuit City

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Best Buy and Target planning more layoffs

Folks, some more depressing news from the unfurling fiscal nightmare: Despite Circuit City’s announcement that they’re going straight to heck, Circuit City and Target, two of its major big-box competitors have announced planned layoffs for hundreds of more employees.

Best Buy offered voluntary severance packages to employees just last December, and although as many as people as 500 took the bait, Best Buy still wants to get rid of more employees fromo their Minneapolis home base. Target plans to close a distribution center, letting go of up to 500 workers, and they’ll be cutting back about 600 jobs at their corporate HQ.

It’s unlikely that either store will go completely under as Circuit City just did, but times are definitely scary, even for these major players. If these two buy the farm too, where are we gonna get all of our awesome PSP games and accessories? Are we going to have to begin manufacturing them ourselves in our own basements? I guess someone’s going to have come up with a PlayStation that’s built entirely from balsa wood, bubble gum, and penny nails.

Edutainment Games Revealed To Be Useless For Getting Smarter

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Games apparently not getting any of us Smarter

A new study involving a survey of ten year old children suggests that games such as Brain Training and Brain Academy don’t actually improve your intelligence. Alan Lieury, a professor at the University of Rennes in France, said that: “The Nintendo DS is a technological jewel. As a game it’s fine, but it is charlatanism to claim that it is a scientific test.” Charlatanism, folks.

During the experiment, the kids were asked to perform a few cognitive functions like completing logic tests and memorizing lists of words. The researchers compared the results of children who practiced using games on the Nintendo DS versus those are practiced with standard pencil and paper exercises. In the memory exercise, the kids using the Nintendo DS were as high as 17 percent more effective overall after utilizing the DS applications.

As to why the experiments elected to use kids instead of adults, professor Lieury states that “that’s the age where you have the best chance of improvement. If it doesn’t work on children, it won’t work on adults.”

We’re not convinced. Everyone knows that playing video games turns your brain into an enormous, throbbing vessel of infinite knowledge.

Russians Steal Giant PSP Prop

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Just a little thing from the global wire to keep y’all giggling: Apparently, some nutty dudes in Russia decided to steal a four-foot PSP displayed in a street-stand advertisement. A pretty fancy shenanigan, if you ask us. What’s even more awesome is that they got it on video. Could be a marketing stunt or something, but whatever it is, it works for us. You’ll want to observe the footage for yourself in order to render your own judgment. Is it a set-up? Is it an international conspiracy?

Now, this isn’t the biggest PSP prop ever made. There’s one in NYC that’s tons bigger. Maybe someone could try to jack that one instead. Don’t go and get yourselves shot or anything. Actually, better just leave that big one right where it is. Leave it alone. Seriously, just go home and play with your regulation-sized, actually-working PSP. And watch this video here.
