Media Create Releases Top Sales List For Early January

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Dissidia Still Dominates For The Third Week Running

Beginning-of-year game sales in the Japan is an important figure for some industry statistics crunchers, so Media Create has dropped a list of video game bestsellers from the period of January 5th,  2009 to January 15th, 2009. Dissidia: Final Fantasy occupies the top spot, which doesn’t really surprise anybody.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy, from Square Enix, has occupied the number-one slot for game sales for three weeks in a row, ever since it launched at #1. Not much on the list is outright startling, except that one PS2 still holds a spot in the top-ten. The PS2 really knows how to hang in there, which, on second thought, isn’t really surprising, considering what a kick-butt system it was and still is. Here’s the official run-down from Media Create:

  • Dissidia Final Fantasy – PSP – Square Enix
  • Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (PSP The Best) – PSP – Capcom
  • Rhythm Tengoku Gold – DS – Nintendo
  • Wii Fit – Wii – Nintendo
  • Wagamama Fashion Girls Mode – DS – Nintendo
  • White Knight Chronicles – PS3 – SCEJ
  • Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III – PS3 – SCEJ
  • Gundam Musou 2 – PS2 – Bandai
  • Hoshi no Kirby: Ultra Super Deluxe – DS – Nintendo
  • Mario Kart Wii – Wii – Nintendo

There it is, folks. Chances are you own at least a few of those titles yourself. Stay glued to your screens for more sales rankings, which we’ll post right here as the year unfolds.

Dragonball Game Based On New Movie Set To Arrive In North America

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Dragonball Game

Namco Bandai recently announced that a PSP game based on the forthcoming movie is set to arrive in North America around the same date as the release of the film. The film should open in theaters on April 9th.

In case you hadn’t heard: Yes, there’s a Dragonball movie being released worldwide under the title Dragonball: Evolution. We’re not sure on anything about the movie except that’s it’s sure to inspire strong feelings in fans of the series. On whether those feelings are akin to fuzzy, warm sensations, or more similar to the strange, rising gorge one experiences immediately prior to a violent riot, the jury’s still out.

Folks, we’re still excited to go see this movie. I mean, c’mon. The special effects should be good. At least the make-up. Okay, maybe some of the hair-do will be fun. Right guys? Awesome.

UK Miffed About Mysterious Lack Of Jeanne D’Arc Release

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Jeanne Darc Never Released In UK
According to sources in Europe, Jeanne D’Arc, the tactical RPG for the PSP from Level-5, never got released in the UK. It was definitely slated for a UK drop, but for some reason, it seems to have missed the mark.

Tons of RPG fans across the globe have been awaiting the release of Jeanne D’Arc, so it’s kind of a shame that the UK crowd is going to miss this, at least for now.

Level-5 is the author of the immensely popular title, White Knight Story, as well as a game still in development named Ushiro.

We’d love to hear word of a UK release for Jeanne D’Arc, so we’ll stay savvy to news from over there. Hopefully developers realize how important it is to keep all of their turfs happy and in good, fresh titles. We certainly do.

Circuit City Is Now Finally Dead

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Circuit City officially closing its doorsMore grievous news from a straining global economy: Circuit City, the mega-brand big box store chain, is officially closing its doors and liquidating its inventory.

After declaring bankruptcy last November, Circuit City failed to find a buyer to assist in refinancing and restructuring. Speculation puts the blame on poor management, myopic retail strategy, and a refusal to stand up to its major competitor, Best Buy.

This is sad news, indeed. Hours did we spend wandering around that store, touching stuff, ogling stuff, and wishing we could buy stuff. Heck, we even got a few good deals or two on open-box stuff. Most of the time, though, the customer service was awful.

We did like spending time in their enclosed audio demonstration chambers, on the other hand. We’ll miss the store, and our sympathies are with the 30,000 unfortunate workers who will be out looking for a new job.

Battle Heats Up Between Sony And Sony Ericsson Over Use Of Playstation Brand

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Sony denies Sony Ericsson the use of the PlayStation brandFor some time now, there’s been speculation that Sony Ericsson has plans to launch a gaming-oriented cellular phone (remember the N-Gage?). Apparently, the folks behind the idea decided to take the plan to the big-wigs at Sony, hoping to slingshot off the successes of the ever-popular Walkman and Cyber-Shot handsets.

Word on the street is that Sony handed down the iron fist to Sony Ericsson, insisting that Sony will only license the Playstation brand if Sony decides to manufacture the new gaming devices independently. That’s some weird intra-corporate power politicking, if you ask us.

A Sony Ericsson spokeswoman said that they “could not comment on what Sony has or hasn’t said. In the past, we have been keen that our product proposition lives up to brand promise, and we feel at the moment the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone.”

Hopefully, the two supposed cooperators will get their panties untied and work together on some really amazing gaming hardware under the Playstation brand. We’ll look forward to what their mutual innovation will produce in the near future. For now, stay tuned for more updates on this fun corporate drama.

Rumor Mill: Persona Will Arrive For The PSP

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Persona PSP Announced by Atlus

Hot off the grapevine is an interesting promise about a game that’s captivated audiences worldwide on the PSOne: Persona. Persona should be getting a near-total overhaul and port to the PSP that’ll keep fans of the series sweaty for weeks of intense gameplay.

Rumor says that the port will feature brand new scenarios, all new characters, and new, innovative storyline elements. The rumor even has the game finding its way to shelves in Japan by this April. The source of the rumors, GameWave, is a popular gaming magazine based in Hong Kong, and has also speculated on ports for Mobile Suit Gundam: Bonds of the Battlefield and Disgaea 2.

Now, there’s no official confirmation on the PSP port of Persona, but enough dust has been kicked up around this rumor to suggest that it’s got some merit. We’ll look forward to hearing more about it as we get closer to April. Keep hope alive, folks: Undoubtedly, we’ll get ours. We always do.

Duke Nukem Trilogy Apparently Does Exist

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

There’s been tons of speculation, but not much in the form of hard evidence that the much anticipated Duke Nukem Trilogy, purportedly in development by Apogee, is actually slated for release any time soon. Minimal glimpses of the game were offered in the form of a short trailer that debuted at E3. Apparently, though, the Duke Nukem Trilogy is very much still on the project board, and the designers at Apogee are still hard at work on it. Here’s a quote from an Apogee representative:

“Both the DS and PSP versions of the game are coming along nicely. On the DS side the graphics are blowing the socks off everyone who sees it (those lucky few outside the company that have seen it), and on the PSP, they say the depth of view is the best they have seen to date for that device.

Development is proceeding at a feverish pace on both systems. There has been implementation of some unique features specific to each system that owners will be glad to see. We are also including some cool bonus game play features that we haven’t spoken about that we feel will enhance the overall way the game is played.”

You can check out the trailer here, but you won’t get much more information out of it. For now, keep your fingers crossed, stay glued to your seats, and we’ll spread the good news as it drops.

Grapevine: Sony Is Conducting A Survey Regarding New PSP Features

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Rumor: Sony asking gamers about new PSP's features

Here it is from the rumor mill, folks: Word has it that Sony is overseeing a survey asking gamers’ opinions regarding future PSP hardware and potential software functionalities that may appear on future systems.

Someone apparently in the know sent word over that participants in the Sony-conducted survey had to rank some features that are currently not available on the PSP. Some purported stuff on the list: Built-in GPS, Bluetooth wireless, internal data storage, and…a touchscreen!

Here’s a more detailed list of possible PSP stuff that appears in the survey:

  • Was smaller, yet retained most of the current PSP’s screen size
  • Offered social networking functionality on the XMB
  • Included a keyboard for easer internet browsing and communication
  • Offered Bluetooth wireless support for easy pairing with other devices
  • Had a touch screen
  • Had an imprved screen for more dynamic graphic displays
  • Offered the ability to find others near you who want to connect for online gaming
  • Offered an e-comic/book download service through the PlayStation Network
  • Included a hard drive for memory storage

For now, this is still, like we said, fodder from the rumor mill. Keep your eyes glued to this website, though, and we’ll keep you up-to-date with more concrete news as it drops.
