Cuboid Is Gnarly New Drop For The PlayStation Network

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Available on the eighth of January is Cuboid, a kind-of-innovative, definitely pleasant-looking, and broadly engrossing puzzler set against a backdrop of high-definition ruins, jungle-like places, and other cool places that the developers have strung together to create a rad braingame environs.

The initial release over the network offers 66 levels, with some new premium packs and a custom level creator on the way. Fun gameplay elements like switches, weak tiles and teleports ensure a dynamic, frustratingly fun time-wasting experience, and the thing’ll look great on a gigantic, indulgent flat-screen television.

All of the levels are solvable, so play ‘em all until you kick their butts. Then have some new-age herbal tea and relax until the next fun PSN drop. That’s all for now on this one.

Fresh Drop Of Qore – Episode 8

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Looking ahead to a great year for killing monsters and blowing stuff up, we’re tickled by the forthcoming drop of Qore – Episode 8, which should be appearing in at least one store by the morning of Thursday, 1/8. Naturally, we’re excited about the slew of announced titles for the PSP3, and this great publication will lay out an overview of twelve months that’s certain to be rich with innovative gameplay and eye-exploding visuals.

We’re looking forward to the Parisian information hunt for tidbits on Heavy Rain, the title that’s spearheading a new sensibility in interactive cinema. Adventure games are about to get a ton cooler; at least, that’s what the big-wigs have been saying all over the Internet. We hope it combines the epic noir of the first half of the last century (of course, none of us have a clue what that was all about, but we’re learning) with the enriching, hair-raising gameplay of mystery-adventure staples like Myst.

There’s a ton of new stuff in Episode 08. Check it out at the Playstation Store and elsewhere. As for downloadable goodies, don’t miss a new, Qore-exclusive Killzone 2 theme and Qore-only access to the F.E.A.R. 2 demo (Expected Availability: Mid-January).

Buzz! Brain Bender Is Run-Of-The-Mill Puzzler

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

We’ve gotten some time with Buzz! Brain Bender, a recent release from SCEE and Relentless. The game is full of puzzles which are actually kind of engrossing and certainly difficult for all sizes of brains, but the game itself is only lukewarm. This will appeal to fans of the genre, but might not attract the new following that the genre deserves, and may even repel the most diehard puzzlemasters.

You pretty much have to endure a number of different puzzles and then find out what your Brainpower rating is, and then see how your brain is improving over time. However, you can play the games as many times in a row as you want, eliminating a perhaps crucial control variable from the not-so-scientific-to-begin with concept. A lot of other similar games allow testing just once-a-day, which creates a more reliable picture of improvement over time.

There’s basic math stuff included here, as well as some rather intriguing pattern recognition and visual mindbending. You’re not going to get boggled if you’re a genius, but even a big thinker might break a sweat on some of these well-designed exercises. Also, different challenge levels are unlocked as your progress through gameplay, so expect a little bit of a ramp-up if you’re finding the game too easy right off the bat.

Content aside, the game itself looks good and takes advantage of the pretty PSP screen. Its colors are warm and energetic, and you’ll at least appreciate the palette. Try this one out a little bit before you commit, but we think it’ll garner a mixed reaction at best from gamers across the board.

Loco Roco 2 Loved By Millions, Including You

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

If you haven’t already been introduced to Loco Roco, now’s a good time to shake some hands and move on to the fascinating, saccharine-cute, kind-of-nauseating gameplay just in time for the release of its sequel, Loco Roco 2.

Many fans of the original cited its ultimately repetitive gameplay, so Sony has made sure to change things up a little bit and also to include lots more to do, including an expanded suite of minigames, to keep your enormous brain and epic attention span in check. It’s super-colorful and the music is fun and has an annoying tendency to get stuck in our heads. The game is named for its main characters, a race of little blobby things named LocoRocos which are under your control.

You have to get them to eat fruit in order to expand in number, and then you can do things like mash them together to create a supergloop of Loco fun. Separate or apart, you can have your LocoRocos run around, jump, and do some other fun stuff with relative ease and fluidity of control. The minigames are predictable in their scope (button tapping, whack-a-mole, etc.) but add a bunch of playability and time-wasting to a game that’s already fun in its most essential modes.

This is a highy addictive game is well-received across the board. File this one under “Sequels That Don’t Suck.” We even hope to see a least one more title in this series.

Midnight Club: LA Remix Keeps Aggressive Racing Fans Happy

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Word from the underground has Midnight Club: LA Remix favored by fans of the series, and especially by die-hard followers of the extreme racing genre, and we tend to agree; this title is packed with action, looks and sounds great, and has tons of replayability. We think its features outweigh the grievances hands-down, and we’re excited to get our friends hooked on this title, too.

The city in which the game takes place is big even for games of this generation, and it’s rendered well. Cruising around look for trouble and destruction doesn’t get much better than this, especially when you’re actually walking around a crummy little town, or sitting on the subway, or commuting to work in your penguin suit.

There’s lots of ways to keep your supercharged racer cruising at speeds around 200 mph, including riding out an opponent’s slipstream in order to take advantage of a turbo boost. Lots of super-aggro characters spew a lot of trash at you from the speakers, so you’ll be adequately pumped up to compete, especially when you’re often restarting races due to unfortunate blow-aways in the middle to high-level difficulties. Racing fans be warned: this might well be your next nail-biting, compulsive pleasure.

2050: The Last Island Demo Homebrew Is Mad Fun

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Everyone has to at least check out this excellent piece of underground code, circulating under the title 2050: The Last Island. It’s only a demo right now, and functionality is limited, but fans of games like GTA and other 3D atmospheric shooters and action questers will immediately recognize the proficiency with which this game is implemented.

The game is based on the Quake engine and looks pretty good, even this early in development. Functionality is instantly familiar, and you’ll be running around and doing stuff immediately with no reservations. There’s lots of stuff to do, like go shopping, fight things, make money, and drive around in various fun polygonal vehicles.

A mission is already implemented, so you can explore some of the activities and sequences which will likely fill the game as it expands in development. The creators have been quoted as wanting to build a hybrid of GTA and The Sims, which sounds like an exciting, invigorating idea. So far, the project looks great, and we give its developers a lot of props for taking on such a thorough project. Stay tuned on this one.

More News Of The Next PSP Systems

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Yep, the rumor mill is grinding away again, and this time there’s a lot substantiated talk of at least two more portable systems on the way from Sony. The PSP is due for a true successor, and fans have been waiting eagerly to see the second genuine ground-up incarnation of the PSP. The new package will probably look very similar to the original PSP, but should push some brand-spanking new hardware. They’ll likely focus on cranking the GPU and visual processing, and probably do some stuff to the connectivity to make online massiveness even more massive.

The other model that we’ve peeked is labeled the PSP 4000. This thing might actually drop this year, which is 2009, if you didn’t notice that the calendar just rolled over. It looks basically like a giant screen with little else to get in the way. Looks like a media geek dream to us, and we expect that it’ll drop with a slew of new interactive and media titles that’ll make use of that beautiful display. Official word is that all rumors of a PSP 2 is being outright denied, but that PSP 4000 looks like it might actually hit the shelves in the next several months.

Neverland Card Battles Makes Us Kind Of Wince

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Yep. It seemed like a good premise: mashing together some of that nostalgic, collectible card game fun with a turn-based strategy game. We remember how much of a good time it was to lay out some cards and tap them and put counters on them and stuff, and, heck, some of us are still doing it. Too bad it didn’t really work out in this game; Neverland Card Battles is stuck somewhere between the idea and actually creating a game that’s fun to play and has some coherency.

The graphics in this game suck. We know they’re cute and kind of retro, but they’re just lazy. The storyline is kind of cool, or at least it’s solid enough to hold our attention long enough to comment on the gameplay. It’s a typical, anime-influenced, timeless battle of epicness and heroes and quests.

Actually, the game itself is more like a board game with card game elements. Strategy fans might like it. It might even translate into an interesting tabletop game, with cute, die-cast figures and some clickable plastic bases. But, as a PSP game, it’s just lame. For some reason, the developers really cheaped out on the implementation. Even the audio is dumb. Try it out for yourself, though. Maybe we’re not seeing the trees for the forest.

Lumines Supernova Continues To Entertain Puzzleheads On The PS3

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Check out the newest addition to the Lumines series if you’re a fan of the tune-based brain-cruncher for the PSP. This time, it’s on the PS3, it looks great, and its audio is simply terrific.

Gameplay, as with the other titles in the series, is straightforward: mash four or more blocks of the same color together and they’ll disappear. Everything is synchronized with the background music. Stay alive and keep playing, and you’ll discover why you love to waste time making shapes disappear.

There’s a couple of modes available for your puzzle-loving pleasure. There’s also an awesome Sequencer mode built into the game that lets you fool around with some loops and rock out a little bit. Definitely an easy way to relax in front of the flat-screen and waste a few leisurely minutes.

Tons of skins and musical themes accompany the game, as is to be expected. You’ll definitely be satisfied with the selection. There’s plenty of ear candy here for the whole family, and you’ll have a good time mixing it all up at your discretion. Double thumbs up on Lumines Supernova.
