Check out this modded-up PS3, which someone designed around the terrifying antagonist of the “Alien” series of films. We haven’t got many details as to how the person responsible for this piece of art went about constructing the modification, but it looks like a lot of time was spent in planning, and the execution looks absolutely meticulous.

The original “Alien” movie was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Sigourney Weaver. It was released in 1979 and introduced the world to an awesome, acid-dripping, totally evil alien that implants its spawn in the chests of humans. That alien was based on a figure in a painting by H.R. Giger, named Necronom IV. Prominent in both figures is that menacing, elongated head and skeletal frame.

The mod seems to be made from parts of a model, carefully adhered to the case of the PS3. It looks like the alien somehow merged with the console and became a single entity. Whatever it is, it’s gnarly to look at it, and is certainly one-of-a-kind. Excellent job, modder person, for your astute and aesthetic modification.

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey writes that “recent channel checks indicate increased speculation for a PS3 price cut announcement from Sony in the next couple of days.”

Sony is scheduled to meet with retailers this week at the annual Destination PlayStation conference. Says Mike Hickey, “We think the company needs to reduce the current price by $100 to effectively restart unit velocity at retail.”

He continues further:

“We are also hearing continued speculation that Sony is working on a non-Blu-ray PS3 console, which could enable them to make the aforementioned hardware price reduction. We believe the market is expecting a PS3 price cut in April or by June (E3) at the latest, so a near term aggressive pricing decision by Sony could provide a positive catalyst for video game related stocks including GameStop, Activision and Take-Two Interactive. If Sony does not cut the price of their console, we expect the continuation of languishing PS3 hardware sales and the potential for publishers to accelerate their reallocation of resources away from the PS3 console.”

Certainly a price cut would be necessary to ensure that the PlayStation stays as competitive or more competitive than its core rivals, the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360. Sony has already secured its grip on the high-definition market by thrusting its Blu-Ray format to the fore, and it already makes use of the extra space available on the Blu-format disc – a significant technology advantage over its competitors.

Those of you lucky enough to own a PS3 along with your PSP will be pleased to know that the popular PopCap puzzle game, Zuma, is set to arrive on the PSN today. The annoying little time stealer seems to be coming in with a facelift that’s intended to take advantage of the PS3’s hardware, including its Dolby 5.1 surround sound. It’ll also have PSP remote play, so you’ll be able to get your small screen in on the action, too.

In the game of Zuma, you’ve got to eliminate all of the balls that are rolling around the screen before they reach a yellow skull. You have to shoot new balls at the ever-encroaching chain of balls in order to blast them away three at a time. You can also trigger chain reactions, resulting in lots of balls getting all balled out. The game’s got a ton of balls, folks.

We’re excited to see what the new PSN version is going to look like. Likely it’ll be similar to the game as we know it, but a little glossier on the outside.

Just because this forthcoming title is so fascinating, we’re throwing it up to your attention, despite its release being exclusively for the PS3. Its own creators can’t really put into words what the nature of the game is – Noby Noby Boy is sort of an abstract, participation-based persistent Universe whose purpose is to house its ever-growing protagonists, known as Boy and Girl. Perhaps its closest analog would be Katmari Damacy, which was created by the same developer, Keita Takahashi of Namco Bandai.

In Noby Noby Boy, players take control of a Lego-man like, stretchable character, who grows as it’s pulled around via the two analog sticks. Players score points based on how much they stretch Boy. As Boy grows in size, its lengths are uploaded to a persistent character, known as Girl. Girl grows along with all of the Boys in the Universe. It starts on the planet Earth, then stretches to the moon, and then expands out into the Solar System, unlocking new environments for users to explore as it gets bigger.

Noby Noby boy will be available for download on the PSN starting this Thursday, January 19th.

Looking ahead to a great year for killing monsters and blowing stuff up, we’re tickled by the forthcoming drop of Qore – Episode 8, which should be appearing in at least one store by the morning of Thursday, 1/8. Naturally, we’re excited about the slew of announced titles for the PSP3, and this great publication will lay out an overview of twelve months that’s certain to be rich with innovative gameplay and eye-exploding visuals.

We’re looking forward to the Parisian information hunt for tidbits on Heavy Rain, the title that’s spearheading a new sensibility in interactive cinema. Adventure games are about to get a ton cooler; at least, that’s what the big-wigs have been saying all over the Internet. We hope it combines the epic noir of the first half of the last century (of course, none of us have a clue what that was all about, but we’re learning) with the enriching, hair-raising gameplay of mystery-adventure staples like Myst.

There’s a ton of new stuff in Episode 08. Check it out at the Playstation Store and elsewhere. As for downloadable goodies, don’t miss a new, Qore-exclusive Killzone 2 theme and Qore-only access to the F.E.A.R. 2 demo (Expected Availability: Mid-January).

Check out the newest addition to the Lumines series if you’re a fan of the tune-based brain-cruncher for the PSP. This time, it’s on the PS3, it looks great, and its audio is simply terrific.

Gameplay, as with the other titles in the series, is straightforward: mash four or more blocks of the same color together and they’ll disappear. Everything is synchronized with the background music. Stay alive and keep playing, and you’ll discover why you love to waste time making shapes disappear.

There’s a couple of modes available for your puzzle-loving pleasure. There’s also an awesome Sequencer mode built into the game that lets you fool around with some loops and rock out a little bit. Definitely an easy way to relax in front of the flat-screen and waste a few leisurely minutes.

Tons of skins and musical themes accompany the game, as is to be expected. You’ll definitely be satisfied with the selection. There’s plenty of ear candy here for the whole family, and you’ll have a good time mixing it all up at your discretion. Double thumbs up on Lumines Supernova.
