Hot on the heels of the latest official PSP Firmware release from Sony, v5.03, comes Dark AleX’s latest custom firmware update. The most current version is now M33-6, which came just minutes after the release of M33-5. CFW 5.00 M33-6 is an exciting piece of homebrew awesomeness that shows off the prowess of the PSP underground. The following text is from the changelog:
This update is a try to fix memory stick low speed since 3.80.
Instructions: Copy UPDATE folder /PSP/GAME/ and run.
If you come from a version prior to 5.00 M33, put sony update as 500.PBP in same folder, or let the program download it for you using a wifi connection.
Changes in 5.00 M33-5:
A setting has been added to recovery, that, when enabled it may increase memory stick reading speed. (only on the psp, not in the pc). By default it is disabled. If you installed 3.71 fatmsmod, do not use this setting, as its perfomance with 3.71 driver has not been tested. Instead, reinstall 5.00 m33-4 using dc8 and update to 5.00 m33-5
Changes in 5.00 M33-6, according to the developer:
- Fixed a bug that made unbootable psp without memory stick or with a bad one.
- The included file fat_comparison.html contains a comparison of perfomance between the 5.00 fat driver, the 3.71 one, and the 5.00 one with the speed up hack during the read of an iso. The test was done on the game Valkyrie Profile in cso format in march33 mode. Other games, modes and applications different than iso reading showed similar results.

I am new to PSP. I recently got a memory stick with a bunch of ISO files from a friend. The ISO files play on his PSP. I currently do not have CFW on my PSP. I copied the UPDATE folder to my PSP. But when I try to run Update ver 5.00 file from the PSP, it gives me an error “The game cannot be started. The data is corrupted.” My PSP is on the latest 5.03 Sony firmware.
Please help.
lol…. you can play game from the memory stick only if you have CFW… Original Firmware from Sony DOES NOT allow you to play game iso/cso…. so all you need to do is change your firmware to a Custom Firmware (CFW) one.
i have the current cfw on my psp and was trying to play iso’s online and everytime i am about to play with someone online an error pops up is it my router or my psp?
I have a PSP Slim [Darth Vader Star Wars Edition] white 3000 series, I did the hard mod to my battery (it was a success), I installed the 5.00 M33-4 CTW(Custom Firmware) and then upgraded to 5.00 M33-6 (That also was a success) Thanx Dark Alex
but, My only concern is that I am not able to play my PSX games; example: Resident Evil 2. I am aloud to select my plugin holding R-Trigger while on the SONY Corp game screen before the game start, I select the 3.71(note that I’ve tried all others within the list on screen).
To save Time and to make your life a bit easier I wanna give a quickrun through of the steps I’ve taken to insert the plugin “After” I upgraded to 5.00 M33-6 from 5.00M33-4 ok here we go… X) in the end I will ask a question because, I’ve done all this through research and I yet dont understand why my PSX games arent playing?
Below is a quick run through on step by step procedure to mod PSP, procedure on how to insert a plugin to your psp’s firmware after Modding:
NOTE: It is the same for both Phat and Slim PSP, I know because, I own both generations and self modded both (1000/2000 Phat and the 3000 SLim), firmware and Plugins are TWO different attributes of software and can be installed to any PSP if done correctly. The safest way to mod a PSP is through softmodding –> but, hardmodding is the ONLY way to install CFW(Without a SECOND PSP that has already been modded). After studying, I learned that Sony’s software is universal and the only set back is having the correct PLUGIN to run a PSX game(which should be an EBOOT.PBP file in GAME folder within’ the PSP’s Magic MS)
MODDING PROCEDURE:
1. MAGIC MS => Magic Memory Stick can only be done having a Real Magic Gate Sony memory stick((noting that some people do have fake sticks and cannot mod the sticks) modding to the stick can be easy be reversed FORMAT.
2. HARD MOD => is done through the battery, opening the battery CAREFULLY creating what is called a PANDORA Battery (can be done on both Phat and Slim PSP Systems BUT the format of the motherboards are different) Do Research on how to do this if you have the guts and skill. I dont recommend doing this yourself, you can buy a PANDORA Battery online on DealExtreme.com.
SOFT MOD => If you know a friend with a PSP that has already been modded, you can Soft Mod it but, I didnt do this method but, information on how to can be easily found.
After the battery was modded or if you obtained a modded battey, insert the Magic Gate Stick and then after, the battery into the Normal PSP(the psp your trying to mod and the power light will turn on with a black screen(this is normal, whats happening is that the PSP is trying to find the start up program in the System Operation). Remove PANDORA once more and when you re insert it, make sure you press Left Trigger and you will be sent to a boot screen. In the boot screen you will see a list of actions vertically placed, meaning you can scroll up and down but don’t, there’s no need to explore, follow my directions and you will not have any problems. Just press X on that screen, then wallah! your running the CFW on either Phat or Slim.
Now you download the PSX Games of your liking, or you can even Rip Game files from direct disc to play in your PSP. The PSP Games are in ISO form and the PSX games are in EBOOT form. EBOOT form games go into your Game folder while ISO Games go into your ISO Folder. Atleast this is how I have it, I can play my PSP ISO’s but I cant play my PSX Games =/ we’ll get to that…
=D we’re ready for plugins! ok this is where things get easier but also ironically complicated LOL!
PLUGINS PROCEDURE:
Very easy! re-insert the PSP through USB with the Memory Stick inside the PSP of course :)) As easy as Drag and Drop lol! lets Proceed
At this point you have a Modded PSP and you anxious to play games and wondering how your going to do that? No problem, you need to find Popsloader file download in the internet. That can be found quite easily but, you need to find a working popsloader. IMPORTANT: With WINrar, you need to open the Popsloader file and drag it inside your SEPLUGINS. AT this point your Popsloader file is in the SEPLUGINS file in the PSP Memory Stick.
You will be able to select it on the M33 Recovery Menu screen. To do that simply hold down the power switch in an up direction for about 3 seconds to completely shut down the PSP System and then hold down the R-Trigger and power up the system once again… wallah! M33 Recovery Menu.
menu should look like this if you have 5.00 M33 CTW(I never had earlier cfw, just 5.00 M33-4 and now the M33-6 so I wouldnt know about the earlier versions =/ sorry dudes) lets continue…

ok now select [Plugins ->], while in this “Plugins menu” select popsloader.prx [POPS] (Disabled)
this will enable it… now we’re done, go back and Exit the menu and it will automatically go to the PSP System screen which is where you can look at your fancy pic, videos and etc.
This is where MY PROBLEM OCCURED!!! OOooo Noooo =….((( I need some serious help because, for some reason even, when I start Resident Evil 2, I hold down the R-Trigger and this is where I would select the correct Plugin which I believe is 3.71 for Resident Evil 2 but, after I select the Plugin, it freezes on the Plugin screen??? Then it will shut down automatically on my PSP Phat and Slim PSP’s.
How can I resolve this problem dear friends? Anyone can help me?

I made the mistake of updating to ofw 5.03 (I KNOW DUMB). Its a slim and lite so i need to get some CFW on it. I have a pandora and a mms with cfw on but it will not boot it up? I also have a psp fat that the cfw went straight onto with no probs. TBH i need the slim and lite for travelling so cfw is a must so i can play my games without carrying them around with me.

OMG, you people NEED to read. R-trigger is for recovery, L-trigger is for popsloader. Also, what NEEDS to be done is either get an actual tool or battery converter, mms, and NEVER use them except - EXCEPT - for cfw and or recovery. Keep them in a safe place as you would your OS disks for your computer.
BTW, if you all really ARE reading as many forums as I`m hearing people claim, then by searching and reading, MANY people are right now NOT able to play psx on 5.00 m33-6 atm. DAX is working on it as we speak (well, depending on time zone).

get your hands on a pandora battery and a magic memory stick or make them….it’s very easy, but also very easy to mess up if you aren’t careful. Pop them in and press x…….tada just search for creating pandora and magic MS. You’ll find all kinds of things

I have an original PSP (Phat) running the original 1.5 firmware. I’m not a serious mod freak, but wondered what my next step from using Devhook 0.52 might be. This only emulates firmware 3.11. Is my PSP able to use the latest Dark Alex 5.00 M33-6 without having to replace the battery and doing all other kinds of wierd stuff to it ?
Any guidance would be appreciated, and I apologise if this questions seems a little too obvious to most.

ok, i got the official sony psp firmware software version 5.03 and i got the fat psp, so i downloaded a game and i put it in the GAME folder of my psp and when i go to it on my psp the icon is corrupted but i still try to play it and it says the game cannot be started the data is corrupt… the game is a CSO file, and that doesnt work, so i converted it to an ISO file and it still has the same outcome, and it starting to get to me so i downloaded the latest Dark Alex 5.00 M33-6 software thingy and when i try to run that it says the game cannot be started the data is corrupt and i really wanna play this game because i am a huge avatar fan and this is the only way i can get hold of the game… PLEASE I NEED HELP, it will be appreciated
well nani, you cant play ISO or CSO game files is you have installed an OFFICIAL FIRMWARE for your PSP.. you must have installed a CUSTOMED FIRMWARE for your PSP so that homebrew GAME ISO and CSO can be played… LOL just download them and follow instructions.. LOL

Its already in there on the boot up screen press select you should see vsh menu go down yo the third row “Usb Device” and change from usb mode to “Umd Disc” connect to your computer and now you will see an iso copy to your pc.Thats the iso you want then put it in your psp in the iso folder.
P.s don’t forget to change back to “Usb device” sso you can put the iso in your psp enjoy ^^

Well jazun all you have to do is turn on your PSP and press select, then a little menu will pop up and all you have to do is change the UMD ISO MODE to M33 driver and they should start to work. It worked for me at least.

All you need to do is buy a pandora battery and magic gate memory stick. You can also hardmod your psp battery and turn it into a pandora battery, but it’s better if you just buy the pandora battery. Sometimes harmodding your battery doesn’t work. You don’t have to buy another magic gate memory stick if you already have one. You may want to buy a 16GB memory stick since iso or cso games are around 630 MB each. When you first put your Pandora battery in your psp a black screen will come up and light will be green and you can’t do anything on your psp. Then you need to turn the memory stick into a magic memory stick by connecting your psp to your computer and using a program called Rains UltraLite MMS Maker for 5.00 m33-4. After you have your magic memory your psp should be able to go to the home menu. Then you need to take out your Pandora battery and hold the L button while your putting it back in and a screen should pop up giving you options. Select “Install 5.00 m33-4 firmware”. Then after it’s installed you should be able to play iso or cso games. You need to put the iso or cso games in a folder named ISO and put the folder on your memory stick and not the root of the memory stick. When you first connect your psp to your computer an autoplay menu will pop up and when you select “Open to view folders” it will take your memory stick where it will show everything that is on your psp, create the ISO folder there and copy your iso or cso games there. After you’ve done that, disconnect your psp and go to the game folder and all your games shouls be there and you should be able to play them. You can also update your custom firmware from 5.00 m33-4 to 5.00 m33-6 by going to the home menu, settings, network update. After you download the update, just follow the instructions and you will have 5.00 m33-6 firmware.

Is this CFW still saying saved games from different versions are corrupted? how do i fix it? Cuz i dont want to start over on my games but I do wanna play new games like rock band unplugged and future games like kingdom hearts birth by sleep(if ever released) and assassains creed. I updated it to 5.00 and then it said the saves were corrupted so i downgraded to 4.01m33 with time machine. But now i dont want to try it as i dont have my pandora battery right now.

I have a psp slim with cfw 5.00 m33-6 and cant play disgaea 2! My question is can i safely and easily switch back and forth between ofw and cfw so i can play disgaea 2 and then switch back to cfw when i want to play my emulators (assuming i am near my computer with my psp and usb cable) is going to be to time consuming or to much of a pain (and by time consuming i mean hours not minutes). plz help if this can be done can someone walk me through it or give me a quick run down of how to do it.

It seems i’m having the same problem with trying to run Disgaea 2. i get the 8 character error. (like 80020142 or something like that). tried switching from umd to m33 driver and still no go :(. any advice? i’m on 5.00 m33-6.

for those of you who want to play ps1 games on cfw 5.00 m33-6, all you need to do is capy the EBOOT to PSP/GAME, once the EBOOT is in {game} folder, create a new folder with the actual name of the game, for example Final fantasy and the eboot should look like this, EBOOT.PBP. Otherwise it will say currapted, oh before i forget cut and paste the eboot to final fantasy folder…….

I have 5.00 m33-6 too. Unfortunatley, those games cant be played on CFW psps :-(. They require OFW 5.55. I’m hoping someone will find a possible workaround for this. Since Dark Alex hasnt returned, things are looking dim. So as for me, guess i’ll just keep playing Soul Calibur BD

OK time to sort stuff out!!
1. 3000 series psp cant be hacked
2. latest firmware is 5.00 m33-6
3. dont go over official firmware 5.00 because 5.55 and 6.00 dont have a decent custom firmware yet
4. you cant jump from a low firmware to a high one you have to upgrade in stages
5. make sure u press select and change to m33 driver
6. even with latest firmware u cant play all games as new ones need higher firmware than 5.00 and theres no custom firmware out yet
7. pray for alex as we need this damn firmware 6.00 hacking lol
8. finally my gift to you, a website i stumbled across with an ace guide to upgrading firmware from any version to 5.00 m33-6, as long as u follow instructions to the letter ull be sorted. gud luck guys
