Sims 3 Pushes Simulation To The Limit

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

'Sims 3' ready for prime time

When The Sims was first launched in 2000, it immediately became the biggest-selling game of all time, obliterating all the records made by Nintendo games before it. Mario and Luigi cannot keep up with the popularity of The Sims franchise.

But when Sims 2 was released in 2004, it further gave Electronic Arts—the game’s publisher—a chance to up what could have been a simple, once-in-a-blue bestseller. Today, The Sims 3 is being launched to probably its millions of subscribers.

The first Sims, created by Will Wright, was a game in which players could control a house full of sims (sims stands for simulation; think SIMONE the movie starring Al Pacino). The lives of these “sims” depends on what and how the players would like them portrayed. There is no goal for the Sims. It’s basically like playing with your Barbie and Ken dolls albeit these can be customized with a flick of the finger.

Although the Sims defer to define what exactly is the game’s orientation, it however instantly become a hit to kids and adults a like. So much that the game’s manufacturer decided to extend it to two more version, The Sims 2 and now, The Sims 3.

The two versions are much the same when it comes to how the game is played; only that a couple or more features are developed with the new versions: graphics, applications, plugins, etc. With couple more years after today, I’m sure EA would again come up with another version of The Sims—with more updated, developed and out-of-this-world simulation that ever before.

Ratings Are Up For Final Fantasy VII

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

ESRB: Final Fantasy VII rated for PS3, PSP

Probably because of consistent clamors made by fans of the infamous the Final Fantasy series, Square Enix and Sony rated Final Fantasy VII for the PSP and also for the PS3. This means we could be seeing this game soon on the Playstation Store as a PSOne Classic.

And as soon as it’s available on the PS Store, we’ll wait final announcement until its ready for download too. Can’t wait to gift my cousin with a new game on his console. An early birthday treat like the Final Fantasy VII will make me a hero to his eyes.

Together with the PSOne Classic, those that are rated for the PSP and PS3 include: Spec Ops: Airborne Commando, XS Junior League Soccer, Ford Racing, Dead in the Water, Contra Legacy of War, and Mobile Light Force.

As of the time I am currently posting this blog, there has been no official confirmation yet as to when is the release of the Final Fantasy VII but with the E3 fest just around the corner, I am hoping we will hear more about the ratings passed on Final Fantasy VII, Spec Ops: Airborne Commando, etc.

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince To Grace E3 Fest

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Electronic Arts, the makers of the Harry Potter version of video games has dropped the full trailer on the Internet days before the big E3 fest. I am quite excited about this new game seeing as I am fans of everything Potter. Yep, so Muggles be thankful for the “Boy Who Lived” who will grace E3 with perhaps even Hedwig in tow, and his wand made of phoenix feather and holly.

But before you start bashing the graphics, remember that the Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince is on different video platforms, and it got versions of every gaming portable out there—the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP, DS, Mobile, Mac and PC. The video released appears to be from the Wii because of the graphics and boxarts we saw.

In this new Harry Potter, you can improve your Quidditch skills for the Hogwarts Cup or spend time concocting potions with Professor Slughorn. You can also join your House’s Duelling Club, improve skills, take on other Houses and use those improved ability to battle the Inferi and the Death Eaters.

The game will take you to location never before seen in the Harry Potter franchise of movies. This is the closest we can get to the world of wizards and Hogwarts as described in the books.

No More Film Adaptation For Castlevania

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Castlevania film adaptation not happening anymore

Even before it officially started, the film adaptation for Castlevania will no longer push through. According to sources, the production of the film has been “sucked out dry” so the producers decided to cut it.

Supposedly, it was to be a Paul W.S. Anderson production (also the one responsible for the Resident Evil series) and a Sylvain White direction. But as the directorial job was passed on to someone so does the production started it way to hell.

The film adaptation for Castlevania was first announced in 2007 and has gone through lots of ups and downs, including being affected by the writer’s strike middle of last year.

The story apparently was supposed to show the origins of Dracula and the rising of the Belmont Clan, who would soon be the vampire-slaying family responsible for saving the rest of humanity.

I was never really a fan of adapting game stories to film. I think we’ve had enough of those in Resident Evil but still some patrons of Castlevania might be disheartened to know they would no longer see the characters in the big screen. But hey, who knows maybe in the future we can have us some Castlevania film.

DJ Drops Up For Grabs

PSP homebrew - DJ Drops: last build

Daaa57150 is on to bigger things so he does not have time anymore to rebuild a new version of the DJ Drops. So if anyone else likes to pick up developing this homebrew, the final release can be found here including the source code.

This game is not yet finished so those who would want to develop it is in for some time.

Developer notes:

What’s inside the demo:

Everything I’ve ever made for Mega Drops (1 & 2) and the levels I was working on for DJ Drops:

  • Mega Drops: levels “Frozen”, “DJ Beat” and “Mechanical Groundwork”
  • Mega Drops 2: levels “Tetris”, “Project Sexy” (slightly improved) and “8 bits”

DJ Drops:

  • The only level I consider finished is called “Underwater”, this one is fun!
  • The other almost finished level is “S Soup”; gameplay is 100% done.
  • The other levels are either missing graphics or gameplay:
  • Graphics-less levels (playable): “Turn and Burn” and “Voltigeur”
  • Graphics-less levels (unplayable): “Bioteck Projekt” and “Mu Song”
  • Gameplay-less levels (ie unplayable): “Cathedral” and “Chiptunes”

Just in case anyone would want to build up this game, feel free to let us know here as we’ll post the latest developments. Can’t wait to try this one out.

The Revival Of The TicTacToe v0.4

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

PSP Homebrew - TicTacToe v0.4

Who ever said that the Playstation Portable is only for action-packed games like the Tekken series and EA sports? I for one have always been fond of playing those classic board games that have been turned into an instant sensation the moment they were “computerized.”

Broodjekaas92 has just released his first homebrew game for the PSP—the TicTacToe v0.4. Now you can pass the time without having to combat all those muscled characters in your screen. It’s like playing Snakes and Ladders in your living rooms, albeit more modern and convenient.

The v0.4 requires CFW 5.00 M33-6 so make sure you already have this one right inside that tiny gadget of yours. Here are the features of TicTacToe:

  • its fully working
  • you can change the colours of the players in the option menu

This is not quite that bad for a first Lua game… and also for a first-timer. I’m sure we’ll see better projects and homebrews from Broodjekaas92 in the future. Keep it up

Shing and Yuri—New Characters In Action

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

We have released and confirmed before that Shing and Yuri is included in the list of the new characters that would be included in the new Tales of VS version. But now we finally have the video of them bringing pain to the game with their Artes.

The beating and the kicking comes after some time, but at least we’ll get to see how Shing and Yuri would add up to the already existing characters in the current roster of Tales of VS. These two will surely add more color to the already exciting and action-packed game. Check the videos below.

Do note that whatever list you have in your hands of the current character count, this does not change it any other way… or add to it, for that matter.

So far, the latest list puts to 20 the new characters. And with 35 confirmed new characters, there’s still 15 more we haven’t seen or heard about. Glenn M. of PSPupdate is betting that Senel Coolidge—the Demon-fisting hero from Legendia—would be included in the list.

PSPLBreakout2 Finds Its Way To Earth

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

PSP homebrew: PSPLBreakout2

Emerging steaming hot from the cauldron is a terrific little piece of homebrew called PSPLBreakout2, and, like its name wholeheartedly suggests, it’s a rendition of Breakout: That game with all the little bricks up top, the paddle on the bottom, and a ball bouncing back and forth in between. Its programmer, the undeniably talented Michael Speck, who masquerades in the tumultuous homebrew underworld as Gandji, has included a bunch of cool power-ups and dangerous power-downs to make the game a little more interesting. Now, most Breakout clones include prize drops, so it’s up to the brewer to make them uniquely interesting.

In PSPLBreakout2, you’ll be blasting through layered brick structures as always, and you’ll be scrambling to catch happy, hopeful green bonus power-ups. At the same time, you’ll be trying your darndest to avoid the angry, evil red power-downs. You’ll also be given the opportunity to take chances with mysterious question-mark drops, which promise treasures (or trifles) galore.

That’s the run-down. Grab the download package right here to give this one a spin, and decide for yourselves: Is this the definitive homebrew breakout clone of the millennium?

Exciting New Trailer For Yuusha 30

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Perhaps you’ve been too busy with your life to have been meticulously staying on top of the new Yuusha 30 updates as they’ve been leaking; if that’s the unfortunate case, then we’ve got a trailer here that should bring you up to speed with what’s going to be new in the forthcoming release.

The trailer reveals the four game modes, as well as taking a peek at the multiplayer mode and dropping a bit of the backstory so you’ll have all the plot you need to fit right into the action. On top of that, it’s got all the elements familiar to fans of the game: Magic, monsters, weapons, badness, evilness, heroism, celebration, um…castles. Yep, and missions.

Fantastic. Anyway, the game’s slated for a drop in Japan this May. We’re not certain of the game’s release schedule in other turfs, but we can bet that it’ll arrive stateside and in the UK sometime this year, if the English translations on the trailer are any indication. Keep your fingers crossed, and we’ll keep you updated with more news as it drops.
