Check out this modded-up PS3, which someone designed around the terrifying antagonist of the “Alien” series of films. We haven’t got many details as to how the person responsible for this piece of art went about constructing the modification, but it looks like a lot of time was spent in planning, and the execution looks absolutely meticulous.

The original “Alien” movie was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Sigourney Weaver. It was released in 1979 and introduced the world to an awesome, acid-dripping, totally evil alien that implants its spawn in the chests of humans. That alien was based on a figure in a painting by H.R. Giger, named Necronom IV. Prominent in both figures is that menacing, elongated head and skeletal frame.

The mod seems to be made from parts of a model, carefully adhered to the case of the PS3. It looks like the alien somehow merged with the console and became a single entity. Whatever it is, it’s gnarly to look at it, and is certainly one-of-a-kind. Excellent job, modder person, for your astute and aesthetic modification.

Fresh off the rumor mill is an exciting tidbit from CES 2009 regarding forthcoming GPS support for the PSP in North America. News from CES 2009 alleges that the device is still in the works for a release sometime this year. No clear information with regard to timing or price has emerged, and nothing in the form of a press release has been dropped. For the time being, all we’ve got to go on is rumor, speculation, and that cherished, universal sentiment: hope.

Some factors look good in our favor, though. First of all, the GPS support has been available in Europe and Japan for years now, so we know that the technology is viable. Second of all, we know loads of people that would love to have this kind of hardware on their PSP, and would furthermore make good use of it. Likely they’re still ironing out details like ownership of maps and other similar corporate strangeholds. More news on this clutch piece of hardware as it drops, so stay tuned.

CES showed off a new application on the PSP that transforms it into a Wi-Fi remoter control that can handle networked audio streams from the Sony-brand audio receiver.

With the application, users can adjust settings, set up and oversee playlists, and browse audio libraries right on the PSP. The XMB drives the interface in the standard implementation.

They’re still beta-testing this, so the public release hasn’t necessarily been promised for any specific date. Other software has tried out the notion of a remote control on the PSP, but hopefully this one will take advantage of the collective knowledge to produce an application that’s ready for prime time. More news as it drops.

We’re hearing from the grapevine that the data geeks at the super-secret underground research laboratory have discovered how to cram two full terabytes of memory onto a single Memory Stick. This is fantastic news. Sony and SanDisk together will develop the first prototype of the new, ultra-dense Stick.

Whatever they cook up, the initial release will come in as a new release for the Memory Stick PRO. Larger formats for the Memory Stick Series are included in the mix.

Current technology oversees PRO memory sticks that hold only 32 or 64 GB of data. That’s a paltry bunch of nooks and crannies compared to the cavernous, gaping caves of storage found in the singularity -sized terabyte sticks that are glimpsed, spectrally, on the horizon.

Besides that, the hardware itself should be essentially unchanged; pin-count is the same, transfer speeds won’t change, etc. Also, the fresh stuff will still support MagicGate and Access Control Function.

Word from the street is that there’s a Sony and SanDisk drop looming that involves a brand-new format, calling itself the Memory Stick HG Micro. We hear of transfer speeds of up to 60 megabytes per second. That’s a ton of information in the blink of an eye. We’ve got an ear to the ground as more of this fascinating stuff drops. Stay tuned.
